Its not just a ritual in Islam but it has a logic and scientific meaning. Everything Qur'an teaches has some logic and scientific meaning like not taking alcohal and pork. Circumcision prevents STDs. In India for example AIDS is more common in Hindus than in Muslims because Muslims cicumcise and Hindus dont. Circumcision is compulsory in Islam so every Muslim is cicumcised.

Circumcision is not just a ritual. The Idea is to cut the foreskin back in order to increase Hygiene. We now have the luxury of batheing every day, but in times past that was not the case. The foreskin when not cut provides a breeding ground for bacteria and for Fungus and yeast. It was healthier in the long run to cut it back and save the inevitible yeast infection and Jock Rot that would come.
Even now a penis that has had the foreskin reduced is much easier to keep clean.
I am ok with Circumcision. It is done when the child has very little control and or feeling in their bodies (traditionally the 8th day after birth) and also they are so young they will never remember the brief pain it causes.
Yes I am circumcised. No I am not Jewish or Muslim, My mom was a nurse and did it for the previously mentioned hygienic reasons.
I will probably have my sons circumcised, though my step son is not.
By the way, Female circumcision is just mutilation. Often during this procedure the Clitoris is removed and it prevents the woman from experiencing orgasm during Sex. Women do not have foreskin. The act of female circumcision is neither biblical or in the quaran.

Circumcision is based in the Jewish faith not Christian.
Christians adopted it, not as a Christian belief, but it came from doctors that believed it to be healthier. Not circumcised myself and I have no son's. But if I did I would not do that to them either. I figure if that part wasn't needed it wouldn't be there to begin with. And I always had a problem with the idea that somehow it was cleaner that way. Actually I believe the foreskin is there for that purpose, to keep the penis cleaner, makes sense to me.

And in Judaism as well, it is not a ritual, though. It is a healthy habit to do. Islam is for circumcision of men only because this is cleaner (cannot really explain it in English, sorry) and strenghtens men's performance in bed. I have no sons but my brothers, nephews, cousins, all muslim men are.
Some poeple in rural areas still circumcise women as part of a social, cultural heritage, not due to religion, that the government is campaigning to stop. I am not circumcised, nor is any muslim woman I know.

I'm not OK with it. Here in Scandinavia, most boys aren't circumcised, it's a religious thing that Jews and Muslims do.
I was born in Seattle, WA, USA, and the nurses there wanted my mother to agree to circumcise me, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. She said no way (she's a nurse by the way) and I'm happy she did. The foreskin protects the penis and actually preserves the sensitivity of the tip of the penis (penis glans). So you don't have to use as much force to have the same sensation when having sex.
The hygienic aspect is moot, and has been, ever since humans had access to water. It's no harder to wash than your armpit (where you actually have to lift the arm first... not really hard).
I can't vouch for this, but according to Penn & Teller's 'Bullshit!', which I watch & love, infants are even more sensitive and frequently go into shock following a circumcision. It looked awful and I'd never do that to my children.

It's required in the part of the Bible that both the Jews and Muslims share. It was a big health issue then, not as much now.
Christians may, or may not have it done, there are schools of thought on both sides of that issue. Depends on the baby, the parents and the doctor what is decided is most healthy for the child.
If your culture and tradition tends to have dirty people, they would be well advised to have the baby cut; it might prevent health problems in the future.

it is not a ritual or religious command but rather a tradition to initiate the step of cleanliness. the essence of cleanliness although given much early in Abrahamic religions, science can prove it only resecntly.
well it is a follow up of tradition from Jewsih religion and is the basis of Abrahamic religion. try reading Bible and it will tell you that John the Baptist was cicumcised.
i have never heard of female circumcision until rescently. i am not circumcised nor is any woman in my family. but yes all men are.
Cleanliness is next to Godliness. and a cleanliness of Heart and soul along with Body will make anyone closer to God.

Many take common sense things our Creator gave us and
turn them into the supernatural.
Like not eating pork. Pigs eat anything, and pork is full of
cholesterol that clogs arteries and causes heart attacks. It was said long ago that eating any kind of sea creature, except
one with scales was an adomination!
People spend too much time ridiculing to see the obvious.
Crustaceans, like crabs and lobsters are scavengers. They
eat already dead and decaying fish. So that couldn't be
healthy for us.
Circumcision just keeps germs from getting built up in the
foreskin of the male, and therefore won't be transmitted to
the female. It's simply healthier.
