They're all large, with large lenses. I'm sure there's a simple, physical reason.

SLR cameras have to be large enough to accommodate a mirror that bounces the image from the lens up to the viewfinder. Rangefinder cameras can be much sleeker (Look at Leica M cameras).
The big lenses have to do with the fact that all camera brands kept their old lens mount system from the film days. And in this case, bigger IS better.

well, there are. and no, not all lenses are 'large'. as far as lenses go, it depends on the company. many companies have compact lenses (now, if you are used to ultra sleek&compact point and shoot cameras, just about anything in the slr style of camera will 'seem' large/big to you). another thing, soom lenses arn't jsut large, soom are enormous!!! (some lenses are so big and HEAVY, they require thier own tripod...). well, back to the 'compact sized slrs', the smallest one on the market as far as i know is the olympus e-400 (the size is about 130 x 91 x 53 mm [5.1 x 3.6 x 2.1 in]). there are also 'four thirds' cameras which seem to be quite 'small' as well (the lenses are skinnier as well).
