1) saying that it has to be taken in context
2) saying that it has to taken in the context of the time it was written
3) saying "oh, but that's the old testament that doesn't count anymore ......... except of course when it can back up our arguments"
4) being able to randomly choose which bits are to be taken literally and which bits are to be taken as a metephor.... as the need arises.
The same excuses could be used for any document.

Hey China, nice christian response. How about actually trying to answer the question.
Remember that he who resorts to insults has lost the argument.
You started with an insult.

Actually it is quite refreshing.
You see the old testament times were very rough and dangerous times God had whole nations marching around trying to snuff the last remaining people on earth who were willing to believe in him. Those were harsh times, if an army came through it would take all your food and if they were in a good mood they wouldn't burn your home down. they might kidnap all your women and carry them off. God knew He had to show mankind another side of himself so came Jesus and he gave the ministry of kindness. If all christians lived as he taught there would not have been all the wars but mankind is determined to do things their own way and so you have chaos.
For a non believer, It is easy to read inconsistancy into the bible looking at old then new testament but really God had to show a different aspect of himself and he knew that the world would soon become more stable and civilized so it was safe to lighten up a bit with the mass murders and the archaic traditions and the mutilations as non believers like to call them.
There are times when the bible can be confusing to one who doesn't understand the nature of God. That is where the trouble begins and it might even be that God meant for us to have to struggle a bit to learn the whole truth.
I do know that the book of Daniel predicted the fall of Babylon and coming kingdoms of Mede-Persia, Alexander the Great of Greece and the Roman Empire several hundred years before it all happened. That was not a lucky guess the person who wrote that had inside knowledge. We're talking about the rise and fall of MAJOR world empires, those aren't made overnight.

Nobody has to defend the Bible.
It is what it is ... warts and all.
But nothing in scripture disproves the premise that it is the literal story of creation, the fall of man, God's plan for the salvation of mankind, and the fulfillment of that plan through Jesus Christ, the one who had been promised, from ancient times.
The portions you write about tend to lend credence to the truth of scripture, for if it was contrived, why would anyone allow such things to be written?
Regarding selective authority and self serving interpretations, this has been a major abuse ever since some folks decided to look to scripture alone as the sole faith authority.
By the way, the Old Testament itself will never expire .... it's the old law that is no longer ... having been replaced by the New Covenant, in Christ, and the one Church he founded for the salvation of all men.
The universal Church that Jesus founded was given full authority by God to make rules, and to regulate the conduct of every Christian, long before nt scripture even existed, and whether or not the Bible, as we know it, would ever come to be.
With absolute, God given authority like that, no excuses or scriptural contortions are necessary, and none are given.
