Nobody who believes in a good God believes their God to be a sadist.
With that said there are those who believe in a God that by other people standards is a sadist. Too many people believe in what they read instead of coming to their own conclusions of who God is and what God has done or not done throughout history.
As far as western history goes until recently dissent from certain texts was met up to the point of death. It's kind of hard to believe in a kind and loving God when genetically you and your progeny are wiped up. The only ones left are those who either agree or are too scared to dissent... Yet a remnant remains.
Thank God things have changed enough, at least in some parts of the world, to have the freedom to find the truth for what it is. And it is vastly better than the fundamentalists would have you believe.

I am my own God. But the God of Abraham, the one that leads Judaism, Christianity, and Islam is a sociopath. He is dominant over everyone, he is too cowardly to face us himself, and he is jealous and vain.
