I like the reaction to the Cross in the movie "Frightnight" when the Rodney McDowel (sp?) shows the vampire the cross and the vampire says "you have to believe in it." It's not the cross that the Vampire is afraid of, it is the faith of God behind the symbol.

Then if you leap to the movie "Dracula 2000" you find out why God is so angry at Dracula...let's just say there was a Son and a few gold coins.

The fictional story of Bram Stoker's vampire, Dracula, derived from an actual historical man, Vlad the Impaler (also known as Vlad Tepes and Vlad Dracula). Although Stoker's fictional Dracula has produced fear in the hearts of readers for a hundred years, the real Dracula proved far more dangerous, scarier and real.

Vlad Tepes was born sometime between 1430 and 1431 in a Transylvanian town called Schassburg (aka Sighisoara). Vlad did not live as a vampire; but as a Christian. Like his father, he joined the Order of the Dragon (Dracul), an ancient Christian society dedicated to fighting Turks and heretics. Vlad earned the name Tepes (TSEH-pesh) which means "Impaler" a reference to Vlad's favorite form of punishment.

In 1408 the Holy Roman Emperor, Sigismund, created the Order of the Dragon. Its statutes required its members to defend the Cross and do battle against its enemies and infidels.

Let's look at it from the true historical background. The reason he would be afraid of the cross would NOT be just because he was evil, but that he was excommunicated (spirtually kicked out, FOREVER) from the Greek Orthodox Church, because of his marriage to a Roman Catholic. Let us not forget that Vlad "Tepes" Dracula was a member of the Order of the Dragon; an ancient society of men sworn to uphold the Church and guard Europe from the Moslem Turkish Invaders.
Actually, Dracula was a religious zealot. He would execute those who sinned against the Church. He impaled unfaithful wives, thieves, girls that had children out of wedlock, you name it. He kept a solid gold, jewel encrusted chalice for all to drink from in the town square, but no one dared to steal it, for they knew what would happen to them if they did.
Not to dampen anyone's feelings or beliefs, but the invention of the cross-fearing Dracula is purely the responsiblity of Bram Stoker, and not because he was in league with Satan. It was because of his excommunication. Once that happens to you, you could be Mother Teresa and STILL go to Hell. And if it were true, he would only be afraid of a CRUCIFIX, not a cross. The cross is a Pagan symbol. Only if it bears the image of Christ crucified, is it a Christian symbol.
I wonder if that would work if he was any other religion? For example, if he was Jewish, would he only be afraid of the Star of David?

Shadow Willow is right.
However the popular concept of Dracula via HollyWood.is Different . As the person holding the Cross ( preferly a silver one) would have to truly believe in Christ for it to work.

He is afraid of the cross because it reminded him about how crapy Christianity made him feel about his nature. But then he cursed God and gave that nonsense up.
Hmmm, you do know Dracula like Jesus are not real.

According to Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing, Dracula's hand was almost cooked when he received a cross from Helsing when they met each other. Secondly, maybe he's allergic besides sunlight and garlic.

I've been surfing more than 3 hours today looking for answer to the same question, and I haven't found a more interesting debate like this. It is pretty worth enough for me.
