So I have this fat, lardy monster of a cat. Every other day he brings me adorable shrews, usually babies, that he has previously maulled to death. Yes, I'm aware he's giving me a gift, but I've burried about 9 shrews in the past month and it's breakin' my heart. Shrews are such sweet creatures, and they don't deserve to die a horrible death by my cat...especially when they're babies! My cat, Roofus, already has a bell collar to alert creatures to his presence, but obviously it's not working.

I'm thinking about putting TONS of bells on his collar. Would that work? I would keep him indoors, but he's a very demanding cat. He's not happy unless he gets to spend some time outside. I've tried letting him in at when it gets dark, but he has usually gotten a shrew by then.

Today I burried one and a HALF shrews, and it makes me so sad that my cat does this. Any suggestions?

unfortunately it's the nature of the beast. Mine bring them to me a lot too...*sigh*

Maybe buying him some furry or feathered toys will keep him occupied....

shrew info below for anyone who doesn't know what they are.

The cat is doing what nature designed the cat to do. And the shrew is no different than a mouse. Give him a treat when he does.

I think by shrew, you mean what we call a mole in the US? My cats catch them, but don't eat them. They must taste badly. I am sorry this stresses you so. I wish I had a solution for you.

Why not build Rufus an outdoor cat enclosure? Australian cat owners seem to have gotten the hang of keeping their felines happy in the great outdoors and yet protecting the local wildlife at the same time through these wonderful (and cheap) self-built cat enclosures. ook it up on line - heaps of ideas!

You are actually very lucky. I had a cat one time that brought me birds, rabbits, and squirrels. Just try not to think about what your kitty did. It is a gift and it is nature. You can't change nature and your cat is not demonic for doing this.

the only solution is keep the shrew killer inside...is he neutered? if not you need to neuter him and he wont have as much of a problem staying inside

Put a couple of bells on his collar so when he moves they hear him coming and can get away.
