In general, for most sports, adequate hydration is necessary and pure water is the best drink. Gatorade supplies some glucose which can be advantageous but more importantly, it replenishes electrolytes you lose through your sweat.
This applies primarily to endurance sports where the athlete sweats profusely or strenuous exercise on hot days.
However, I saw an episode of Dr. Know on PBS( the funny guy in the glasses who can figure out everything) where he tested three athletes running the equivalent of a 1/2 marathon.
They were all equivalent runners and the difference was that
one drank just water, one had orange juice, the other Gatorade.
For this test, the runner who drank Gatorade had the best performance, water was next, with orange juice bringing up the rear.
So for distance running, Gatorade may be better. For every thing else, water is just fine.

As stated by several other people, unless you are exercising, Gatorade is a waste . It's full of empty calories - sugar! You would be better off adding a slice of lemon/orange or lime to plain water.

No, if your playing a sport than yes, gatorade is better due to the Electorlite it posses, however NOTHING CAN OR EVER WILL SUBSTITUTE WATER. Its a vital part of life. Gatorade isnt that good.

For most people water is sufficient to hydrate while working out. If you workout really intensely for longer than an hour you may need to do more than just hydrate, in which case Gatorade would be better.

Gatorade restores electrolytes for athletes who don't have the time to sit down in the middle of a 100 meter dash in order to take a breather. It's good for athletes to use when they're in need of a quick power boost or a refreshment, but for the every day people who work in offices, there's really no need for it. Water's just as good, and it purifies your blood too.
