"If all of life is meaningless, and ultimately absurd , why bother to march straight forward, why stand in the queue as though life as a whole makes sense?" —Francis Schaeffer, The God Who Is There

"meaning" is an abstract concept that exists only within minds. And it's one philosophers pretty much suck at even telling us what the hell they mean. This is why I like Science more than Philosophy, none of that wishy washy "is beauty truth" or "humans can't outrun tortoises" crap.

If everyone completely passes out of existence when they die, what ultimate meaning has life? Even if a man's life is important because of his influence on others or by his effect on the course of history, of what ultimate significance is that if there is no immortality and all other lives, events, and even history itself is ultimately meaningless?

Isn't this more or less the same as question 1?

Suppose the universe had never existed. Apart form God, what ultimate difference would that make?

I don't understand. If THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE did not exist, it wpuldn't matter to you? I...
...
What the hell DOES matter to you?

In a universe without God or immortality, how is mankind ultimately different from a swarm of mosquitoes or a barnyard of pigs?

Anyone who needs god to have morals is a sociopath.

What viable basis exists for justice or law if man is nothing but a sophisticated, programmed machine?

the program. Duh.

Why does research, discovery, diplomacy, art, music, sacrifice, compassion, feelings of love, or affectionate and caring relationships mean anything if it all ultimately comes to naught anyway?

OK, now I REALLY wonder what the **** matters to you.

Without absolute morals, what ultimate difference is there between Saddam Hussein and Billy Graham?

This is why i don't give a **** about "objective morals". Humanism rules!

If there is no immortality, why shouldn't all things be permitted?(Dostoyevsky)

Again with the sociopath stuff. Also, this is getting repetitive.

If morality is only a relative social construct, on what basis could or should anyone ever move to interfere with cultures that practice apartheid, female circumcision, cannibalism, or ethnic cleansing?

NEXT SUBJECT PLEASE

If there is no God, on what basis is there any meaning or hope for fairness, comfort, or better times?

NEXT. SUBJECT. PLEASE.

Without a personal Creator-God, how are you anything other than the coincidental, purposeless miscarriage of nature, spinning round and round on a lonely planet in the blackness of space for just a little while before you and all memory of your futile, pointless, meaningless life finally blinks out forever in the endless darkness?

LOL see this amuses me. I am a reverse nihilist. I find "the existential dilemma" funny, paticularly, people who think it's depressing. You ARE just an insignificant speck in the universe. Stop being so damn arrogant as to think the Universe gives a **** ig ALL KNOWN SPACE ceased to exist. the entire Hubble Zone (all known stars and planets who's light has reached Earth since the Big Bang) is pretty puny.

Fine by me.

Just for the record, I wholeheartedly believe that there's "more to life than meets the eye." But the Christian religion asks me to believe that (a) a virgin birth happened, (b) some guy did a lot of amazing things 2,000 years ago even though there's no historical evidence that he did anything like that, (c) some guy put all the animals in the world on an ark during a flood, (d) the world is 6,000 years old, and (e) a great person who rejects Christ is going to Hell but a not-so-good person who accepts Christ and confesses his sins is going to Heaven --- and I refuse to believe any of that.

Let's see if I have the gist of your argument.

Premise 1: We are rational beings who try to make sense of our world.

Premise 2: Life is unfair.

Therefore: There must be somebody giving out prizes and punishments after the show.

Have I got it? Wishing life had an ultimate meaning is wishing nonetheless. The universe has no obligation to satisfy you. Insisting that your PARTICULAR life has meaning is just foolhardy arrogance.

Life does not need some grand externally decided purpose to be worth living. Life is worth living for nothing more than the sake of living.

Suppose you had no fear of the consequences of killing yourself. How would the fact that some powerful unknown entity put you here for some reason you can determine make you WANT to live?

You and I face the same problem of desire to live. The difference is, I feel free to change things if I choose, whereas you are afraid of the "eternal" consequences.

As an atheist I know there is much more to life than meets the eye. The difference between myself and a christian is that I don't blindly just say and think that it's all some gods doing. It amazes me that christians can close their minds and accept that simplistic and childish logic and be satisfied.

I know you mean well, by what you have posted, but don't be naive we live in a cynical world and don't believe that just because an organisation, however heartfelt, has written some words on a subject that that automatically makes them right.

As a nihilist, I agree with everything on that first website. Funny how close those Christians were to being nihilists themselves.

There is more to life than meets the eye. But I do not need your websites to show me that.

What? Why are you asking Atheists about a Christian website? You DO know what an atheist is, right??
