When my ex and I were first engaged he used the stone from a wedding ring set he'd bought for a former girlfriend to have a necklace made for me for a wedding present. Over the years he also bought me jewelry with my birthstone in it. I never wear that stuff because I never have the occasion to and I hardly wear jewelry. Would it be bad to use those stones to make my new wedding and engagement rings? At least they would get used and it would cut the cost of the new rings.

The ring that the diamond came from was another woman's engagement ring. In fact he had sold that set to someone then wanted it back when he met me thinking I would wear it instead. I told him he was insane if he thought I'd wear someone else's ring. So he had the diamond set in a necklace for me for our wedding. We later married and recently split after 30 years. I have all the rings from that relationship because he left them with me.

Sure. That would be some practical usage.

If it is OK with you and your fiance, then it's OK.

However, I'm curious as to why you kept the engagement ring from your ex. If he bought it for you, and you are the one that ended the engagement, he legally should have gotten the ring back (but not if HE ended the engagement). I have seen several court cases on TV about this, so I know that's the law.

If you are totally sure that there is no chance the ex would pop up again and legally request that ring back, then it is yours to do with as you wish.

If you are comfortable with wearing jewels from an ex, go for it...

I see nothing wrong with it. Make it into something especially for your taste only.

Go for it, it's not tacky, it's resourcefull. As long as you're not going to be hung up on it later...
