Does it really matter if he tried to save himself? He at least made an effort to get rid of the grenade. I do not know all the facts, I can only speculate - regardless of motivation, the man apparently saved others' lives. Soldiers are trained to react in such situations, so, apparently he reacted. Does it make any less, the worth of his efforts?
If you are being a skeptic, it's one thing. If you are trying to be an ***, that's quite another. I do not wish ill on any of our service personnel in war. Most especially an illicit war of questionable fate and certainly ill planned, with apparently no real thought about its ending. Or, is there an ending to such as this? I would that all our military were not in Iraq, at all.
So, whether this man is a hero or not, for his actions seems quite unimportant, don't you think? I believe he is heroic for just being there!

He should be considered a hero. Even in trying to throw the gernade back he managed to save his comrades at the expense of his own life. He might have been trying to save himself, but he still didn't run away and leave his buddies to die. You may not think he is a hero but I'm sure that his comrades would argue with you on that. They are alive because of him, even though one of them took some shrapnel. So quit trying to degrade this brave man's sacrifice by throwing your twist on it. Unless you were there you don't know what happened.

Be a man for once in your pathetic life and get in touch with any SEAL and tell them your opinion...
It's very easy to understand how a coward like yourself can not grasp the concept of what being in the military is like...
Petty Officer Monsoor represents everything you hate about the military and everything you could never be...

So, you don't really have a question here? Well, I have. What would a Slimy Little Rat know about heroism? The people who survived the grenade blast say one thing; you say another. Who's the fool? Who's the liar? Do you look in the mirror, and then just assume that everyone else is an SLR like you? Your nickname, "erudite," is ironic. It certainly doesn't describe you.

If he fell onto the grenade, he was not trying to save himself. However, being who you are, you just can't bring yourself to admit that someone could be a hero even if you couldn't.

Yeah, because these brave soldiers are the ones who release and write these news articles right? Most of the time it's the PR person for the military who gets these stories out to reporters so that they can put them in the newspapers, regardless if it really happened that way or not. Besides, you wouldn't dare risk your life for anyone so shut it.

Even if he was trying to get the grenade and save his own butt you have to admit that shows great presence of mind. He could have simply stepped out of the door as the structure he was in would likely have absorbed the majority of the blast or at least made it less than lethal for him. Regardless of what may have been going through his mind at that moment, he was doing something he believed in. Would you die for your beliefs?

How would you have reacted? Oh, that's right, you would never have been there.
I would hope the military would lie to protect this man's family and memory. What's it matter to you?
He's a hero because men lived because his body absorbed most of the shrapnel and because, unlike you and me, he is there.
So lighten up, Frances.

its the assumption u take from the situation, United States Military sees the situation like that he sacrifies him self for others. they must have proof also like body wounds etc etc.
you were not there, you take it vice versa..
