the machine needs to be able to read the barcode on the can,the can could be mashed,but if the barcode is readable by a laser,it will work.(the machines just crush the can anyway).and,as far as I know,the machine don`t give cash,not in MA anyway.you get a coupon out of the machine,then you can bring it in to the store for redemption.

The machines do work the same way in Oregon as the other yamster reported. But not all stores have these automated machines. If you have crushed cans that you want to turn in, check with the smaller convience stores or markets (anyplace that sells pop) and see if they will accept them crushed. Some will because they require less space to store.

If the cans are crushed and you can't find a store that will take them, try a local recycling center as they will pay cash for the cans by weight. Last time I did this it wasn't as much as the deposit was, but the price fluctuates.
