I read in an article somewhere that a street name was changed from something like Castle Street to 23rd Place because "...war industries needed simple addresses for the war effort." I sort of understand how the street name is simplified, but I dont have a clue as to why it would be done to help war effort.

Think of it this way, its easier to plan any counter assault or area sweep when you have a simple street name or number. A lot of times soldiers don't have a lot of time to take notes so they make them into numbers so that they can get a better strategy going faster. Plus for radio communications it is faster and easier to use numbers instead of names. You are less likely to have miscommunication using numbers.

It's not really a war effort question.. Any town that is numbered is so much easier to whats going on. X delivery driver..If I am on 25th st. and got to go to 89th st... easy.. 64 blocks to go.. If I'm on Maple st. and gotta go to Bong av. No idea.. got to look at a map.. Anything to make things easier.

They are putting all adresses in the computer---- I would guess the computer they use reads and remembers numbers better than words.
