Here's the thing. John Lennon was a child of his time. He went to India and learned from a guru after rejecting Jesus early on in life. Perhapse he saw all of the hypocrisy of people who professed to know Jesus as their Savior on Sunday but whose lives were no reflection of His. Then when he found no satisfaction in the eastern mystics he looked around at this world and thought that all of it's problems were due to nationalism and religion and that we needed to set aside all of these societal structures and just love one another. That all sounds good but he missed the boat early on in life.
He failed to recognize that the problem in this world was and is SIN. Behind all of the wars and all of the other evils in this world is sin and the only way to overcome sin is to turn to Jesus in spirit and in truth and to be born again. That won't solve all of the world's problems but it will at least solve that problem one person at a time. Unfortunately the Bible predicts that things are going to continue to get worse until Jesus returns to receive all of those people who have separated themselves from the world system and unto Him.
Yes, John Lennon was a dreamer. He may have had noble desires about the reformation of this world in love but he failed to realize that on our own we are helpless. People are not getting any better just because of technological advances or more and better education. In fact, it was people like John who led the vanguard of the falling away from Biblical morality that at least on the surface kept a lot of people from becoming as immoral as today's generation is. Jesus is the only hope for mankind not another self improvement program.

While there are some laudible sentiments in that song, there are some things in there not everyone is going to agree with.
It is easy for John Lennon to suggest that if religion were gone that life would be fine - but history has not borne that out. irreligious agrarian societies, such as the Soviet Union under Stalin, and Pol Pot's indochina, have been some of the most brutal and inhumane societies there have ever been.
I like John Lennon as much as the next guy, having been a huge Beatles fan. But I have my own opinions on how to find peace. And as laudible as Lennon's quest for peace was, people have already tried the road he suggested, and it really didn't go all that well.

Hey man I have to give a thumbs up.
I like A Perfect Circles' remake of the song too, though you can't beat an original. This is my favorite John Lennon song

Ah, my favorite song, but apparently peace and love are out of fashion in our modern world. We're at war and flag waving and religious cries of moral righteousness are all we hear from every part of the world. It seems everyone wants a lovely peaceful world, but only if it's on their terms and they still dominate with the power to destory everything if they should so choose. I feel a much greater patriotism to the earth and all humanity than I do just for my own nation and culture. I understand more than ever why hippies just wanted to drop out of society and say screw it all.

I love Lennon/McCartney
The song 'Imagine' is considered to be the atheist anthem.....so I think it would be hard to make that point in this section of Yahoo answers. John was before his time......great man. If people actually understood it, then we would all hold humanity as precious. It seems bogged down in a world that is so pretentious.

This would be all well and good, IF mankind was the type to do for others instead of for themselves. Sadly, this is not the case.
People DO live for today - no consideration of tomorrow - how to prepare for it, what suprises it may bring, whether it will come at all. People live for themselves, without any consideration as to how their actions effect others.
Only Christ can bring mankind together in love & service to one another. Without Him, we worry about ourselves, & if they're really lucky, we worry about our families.

I vote that giving John Lennon a "thumbs down" should be considered the worst possible sin.

It's the best song he ever put out, and we would all be better off it that became a reality. Thumbs up to Imagine.
