If it's the soul, are dogs undead?
Think about it...
And I agree with mrdav76.
How about this?:
Life is the characteristic state of organisms and individual cells. Properties common to the known organisms found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi, protists and bacteria) are that they are carbon-and-water-based, are cellular with complex organization, undergo metabolism, possess a capacity to grow, respond to stimuli, reproduce and, through natural selection, adapt in succeeding generations.
An entity with the above properties is considered to be organic life. However, not every definition of life considers all of these properties to be essential. For example, the capacity for descent with modification is often taken as the only essential property of life. This definition notably includes viruses, which do not qualify under narrower definitions as they are acellular and do not metabolise. Broader definitions of life may also include theoretical non-carbon-based life and other alternative biology.

IN SCIENCE...................
IN PHILOSOPHY.............
It has been said that to end one's own life, a man need trip up but a once.
However, it has also been said that this should not cause anyone to hold their life in especial value, as life has a rather peculiar habit of returning after it has ended.
SOUL ESSENCE OF LIFE.....
The soul is the perfect and eternal divine essence. The soul may commune and communicate directly with the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, and thus magnify the divine energy of the soul. The influx of the soul energies into the human consciousness is experienced as the divine attributes of love, intelligence, revelation, power, beauty, goodness, freedom, peace, joy, etc
The human soul is a silent harp in God's choir, whose strings need only to be swept by the divine breath to chime in with the harmonies of creation.
Spirit is energy, the force that activates the human consciousness and gives it life. Spirit individualizes itself as soul and so resides closely within each consciousness. Many people have said that a human being has a soul - but it is closer to the reality to say that the soul has a human being. The soul, being Spirit, is more enduring than the human consciousness.

I think philosophers are the best romantics. I spend as much time in philosophy as I do in singles and dating, but my top contributor badge is in the latter, LOL! Why? Because philosophers can see things that most other people can't. As the saying goes, "love is blind." Oddly enough I actually disagree with that statement. Love is illuminating and people are blind. See, there goes my philosophical eye again, LOL! Do I believe that more relationships would be successful if people looked at love more analytically or more realistically? No, not more analytically, but more honestly, and that is what philosophers do. We can help people "see the why" and although that may not change how they feel it can help them better understand what they feel and knowing what you feel gives you choices. I think when it comes to romance and feelings any tool to help us understand the heart is of great value, but people often ignore the one that is the closest: their own mind. Good luck!

"Life" was black and white back when people had no insight into the inner workings of it. Now that we do, we are struggling with definitions, just as we were recently struggling with what 'planet' means.
The more information we have, the greater the need to refine our definitions.
So, what is life? If I were given free reign to define life, I would say life is simply any positive feedback loop in a limiting nonlinear system.

There is no soul. Think about it. If you are in a car accident, you might end up with amnesia and never remember your family and friends. And as for scientists, it has been defined as far as my knowledge goes, but I don't have any links for it.

Life is what you make it. This sounds super simple but I think its the answer. We all have the power to make our lives what we want them to be. Other than that you could say we are a bunch of parasites feeding off the earth and thats it.
P.S I'd stop looking in the Bible for real answers to life.

My opinion is that life is the act of 'being' which is not limited by our physical bodies beacause the soul lives on.

I know exactly what Life is. It's a board game made by Milton Bradley. And a breakfast cereal.
