Ok, I was driving 96 on a 70 mile-per-hour free way. My ticket says that I can't take a defensive driving class b/c I was going more than 25 miles above the speed limit. But it's my first offense, so do I still have chance to take defensive driving class? What should I do? and also, will my insurance go up too? Thanks!

I don't plan on fighting the ticket, b/c I know I was speeding...breaking the law. I was going home from college for the first, I guess I was too excited. I'm ashamed about how fast i was driving, but i really don't have the $300, being a college student. Do you think if I just go to the judge and plead guity really sincerely, he/she will reduce the fine?

Well, I prefere not to get a lawyer, b/c i know i was wrong. Why fight it if I even know that i have no chance of winning? And yes, i know i should slow down, and trust me, i DEFINATELY will in the future. I've been driving a couple of years, and never got a ticket until now. Also, thanks to some of you that really gave me some good answers, and to the rest: I know I'm wrong, I know it's selfish, I'm sorry about what I did, I understand this is a good lesson for me. but this is not a ethical question.

hey forget the negative people on this post...most likely you can not take the defensive driving course b/c it sounds like it is a rule on the more than 25mph thing..however..**if you got $$ get an attorney(ask around for the best) **but rarely do i do this for a speed tix...so here's your best bet...get to court early..i mean go..dont just pay the tix..get there early and find out who the "DA" (district attorney) and find out (sometimes they announce) when you can speak with them about your tix..tell them it is your 1st offense..i dont want this to affect my insurance..etc..they will usually advise what they can do for you..sometimes reduce the speed over the limit or give you the class...or give you a deferment of prosecution(dont do it again w/ deferment b/c if you get popped again..w/in usually 3 yrs or so it will show on ins again w/the new charge)

Why do people always think they can get out of something? Pay your ticket. Learn a lesson. Why do you need to drive a hundred miles an hour? If the limit was 70, why can't you be happy driving 75?
As far as it being your first offense,if you murdered some one, but it was your first offense would you expect not to go to jail?

You were doing 96 why? Guess you couldn't give the cop a good reason either. Your insurance just might go up. I'd go to court and see if you can plead guilty to a slightly slower speed. If you are lucky the cop won't show up and you can get away free from anything.

Do you have money,!!!
As a man who has spent $23.000 in the last 8 years, here's some sound advice. Get a lawyer, (right) tell him the deal, first time & all that stuff, secondly you TELL him you want it to go away, you want no points. It might cost 500 to $1.000 but no school, no points. Don't worry about the rest, your lawyer should take care of that its his job. Make sure before you hire him that, he has agreed to make it go away, or at least get what you want!.
Remember he works for you, welcome to the world of justice,as they say it serves( just-us ), and that ain't you baby.

Won't be able to dismiss it but if you go to court, admit your guilt and ask the judge to consider reducing the fee considering that it is your first offense. It would not hurt to tell the judge that you are now a more observant and safe driver and that you learned your lessons. Judges like to see that people are contrite.

well, the rules may differ from state to state. i live in california, and i was ticketed for going 96 on a 55 (highway 41, in the 559). since it was my first offense, i was able to take the class and avoid having a point placed on my driving record.
your options should be laid out for you if you call you local court office and speak to a clerk (someone who takes payments for tickets and so on). he/she will be able to tell what your options are and under what circumstances they apply.
good luck:)
if you want, drop me a message and let me know how it turns out. i know exactly how you feel.

say u had the runs and you couldn't hold it in and u had to speed through traffic. haha but seriously you shouldn't be driving that fast if you had crashed you would have ended up in a million pieces scattered along the highway.

your insurance will go waaaaaaaay up if they dont cancel you!
this is considered an excessive speeding ticket, very dangerous, and alot of companies won't tolerate it, first offense or not.

I agree with Gaspode. You are most definitely SOL. The judge will probably cite you with reckless driving. Buena suerte...
