I'm a college student and I have wanted my knuckles tattooed for a long time. I know exactly what I want to get done, it means a lot to me, and I know it's not something I'll get tired of or regret. . . Unless it means I can't get a job in the future. A lot of my friends are advising me against it because they say I'll have a really hard time finding a job. I know that lots of employers won't hire people who have visible tattoos, but I'm not getting something like "HARDCORE" or "ROCK ROLL". It's just going to say "fidelity" in pretty (and small!) scripture. I love the thought of self-expression but hate the thought of it limiting my career choices. So what do you think?

I would suggest that you get a temporary henna tattoo for at least a month or two to test it out. You have to think "Am I going to want this when I am old?" It WILL distort with age and you will have to live with it or get the more painful and expensive removal treatment.

It is true that most employers do not like visible tattoos, but they cannot discriminate because of appearance (unless the job is ABOUT your appearance, like modeling or acting). I would say IF you do get them, when you go for interviews, use make-up and cover them up well. Get hired first, then do a good job and they cannot fire you if they discover somewhere along the line that you have tattoos (unless it is specifically against company policy). Then all they can really do is request that you cover them with the make-up or gloves, rings, etc. while on the job.

The most important advice I can give you is something that many have already said and that is to be absolutely sure you want to do this before you try something so permanent.

Your friends are right, but in more then just a job. Tats are still frowned upon by many & tho some things said may not bother you, there will be limitations. I have one on my lower arm & as a man still must wear long sleeve shirts (no matter how hot it gets in a white collar job). It is the little things that can make or break you. A couple years ago I went for my first manager job (did not get it) but was told as I was walking out with the VP "a word of advice, lose the mustache. Have you ever seen a Director level or above with facial hair?" Thinking about it while driving home he was right. Every high level person was clean shaven. The mustache is gone but the tat is a little harder to remove.

That is a bad location as far as jobs are concerned. It don't matter what the tattoo is most jobs don't allow people to work there who have any visible tattoo. Likewise most are against piercings too other then the stander 1 hole in each ear some allow 2 ear piercings in each ear. So I would suggest you find another location to place your tattoo. That is the # 1 bad thing about knuckle tattoos or any other body part that is going to be exposed daily. Yes now days its more acceptable for people to get tattoos however places of business have not caught up with it. So they do not allow it. Most restaurants and retail stores don't allow it neither. Most retails stores are not too picky about it but several don't allow it. Since you are in college I'm sure you are going to get a job which don't allow it.

If you really want it then i say go for it but yeah it is going to have some big effects on finding a job. Most don't want visible tattoos. And if you have them and they do decide to hire you then I'm sure you will have to cover them. What would you use? Gloves or bandied. You might look a little funny using either of those. And whats the point of getting a visible tattoo if yous just gonna cover it up?

I love the looks of tattoos, and have always wanted one, but there is one thought on my mind, when I get the urge: Do I want this tattoo with me, wherever I go, forever?

Take into consideration, age mean wrinkles. Your knuckles wrinkle more than most of your other skin. In 40 years, you are looking at having excessive distortion of your tattoos.

Think too, of all the clothes that you ABSOLUTELY had to have, and then three months later, they ended up in a rag heap.

Consult a person that does Henna tattoos. Take it on a test drive for a few months, even a year, before you commit.

You will find out soon enough how badly you really want your tattoo.

Here's my idea, though you might not like it: don't get a knuckle tattoo. I hear they hurt! Plus having knuckle tattoos might very well ensure you never have a job interview. Get one on your arm. Something bad ***, but one you can also cover up if you have to.

I used to say that I wouldn't get tired of my tats but I kinda am. I am so glad that I put them where I can cover them up when in a professional environment. You can put a tat anywhere but if it will interfere with a career in the future(which it will with that location, unfortunately we live in a judgmental society) then I wouldn't do it. I used to work in a day spa and this girl came in to fill out an application and the owner and his wife wouldn't even consider her for an interview because she had a tat around her wrist in plain sight. I felt bad for her, they didn't even give her a small chance because she likes tattoos. I'm telling you that you should get the tat where you can see it only. It will still be special in a different spot and you can still get a career after college.

While I am into self expression, I think u should first look at the effects it will have in the future. As sad as it is people judge others on appearances and as sure as taxes come up with bad thoughts. It is yours and only your decision but there r plenty of places to get them where they are out of the bosses sight, ie back of the neck, shoulder blade,on the wrist u were your watch, ankle etc, so express yourself without hindering your job opportunities.. Good luck with it.

Don't do it -- you never know where life will take you, and having tattooed knuckles might prevent you from receiving the opportunities you may otherwise earn. Plus, people automatcially make assumptions about other people with those types of tattoos, and no matter how much you say you don't really care, it seems we all end up caring. If you really want a tattoo get one that you can cover up. Plus, do you want your tattooed knuckels in your wedding pictures, your baby's baptism pictures, your teenagers graduation pictures, etc. etc. etc.

For most employers visible tattoos are a no, it doesn't matter what the tattoo looks like or what it says. Also knuckle tattoos would be hard to cover up if need be.So if you got the tattoo I'd say yes you would be limiting your options.
