Is the kitty young or a kitten? I've raised lots of kittens and they skitz out like their on speed or something, especially if they don't have any other kitties to play with. I read somewhere that cats need about 30 bursts of play per day based on catching mice (they need 5 mice a day to live and 5 out of 6 attempts will be unsuccessful) so it's in their genetics. It happens at 2AM because they go thru cycles of running all over the place to sleeping to running again...mine have the same schedule.
Trust me based on personal experience if you get him another cat to chase around he'll be less destructive. And he'll quit puffing up and running sideways for no reason...

Cats are nocturnal animals they sleep mostly during the day, and can get up to 12 hours of sleep so they have lots of energy. Best way to stop this is play with your kitten for a good while before bed the kitten will tire out sooner giving you more sleep :)

Maybe someone is driving home with their car stereo blasting on a particularly annoying frequency that you can't hear.
Maybe there is a new cat in the neighborhood that is allowed to prowl and arrives in your yard at 2 am.

Cats are nocturnal. They play at night. Their instincts tell them that is the best time of day to hunt. It's totally normal.

Is he fixed? If not probably can smell/hear a female nearby in heat, can really drive him batty-bonkers and you too. See if you can hear him at one specific spot, if so he's probably lamenting that he can't get out at the other cat, and being teased.

Nope. Cats do that all the time, they're nocturnal creatures. My cat has her "witching hour" at 3am, where the entire world morphs into one big cat toy.

It's just a cat thing. When my two start rampaging I just pick my feet up out of the way.

my cat's "seeing martians" hour varies from month to month. Lately, it been at 5am. I think young cats - specially if kept indoors all the time - get a burst of energy that they need to burn burn burn. Its normal. They tend to calm down as they get older - a lot older.

2 am sounds like it could be full moon time, it does effect their behavior you know.
