Check with your local laws. I know for a fact AS IS means nothing in Massachusetts. Certain states require warranties on cars. Before anything gets out of hand check with your local lemon laws for the state where you purchased not live.

check on your contract that you sign with private seller. if you see the words " AS-IS", you will have no Rights to anything because you sign the contract, doesnt matter if he told you the transmission and engine was good during the buying/selling process. IF you sue him in court, you will have a burden of proof that he said that the transmission and engine was good. and I can see that you are out of luck because your seller will say no such thing. and judge in this case will look at the contract that you sign and enforce the contract within the four corners of the paper unless the seller, in your case, defendant admit to the judge that he said and transmission and engine was bad and AGREE to fix it for you. caveat emptor, let the buyer beware. You should have taken it to a shop and paid to get a diagnostic before you bought it. You have no legal recourse, sorry.

you bought the car as it is that what your bill of sale ses if it dose your f u ck ed but i would try to sue if you paid more than 500.00$ for it
