There are a lot of things to consider. Do you live in the city or in the country with a big yard. Do your kids have any allergies? If you have a yard and the time to exercise the dog you could consider a more active dog like a Lab. If you have other pets such as a cat you should not get certain dogs who may not get along well with them. ( such as a Jack Russel ) Boxer's make excellent family pets but need some room to run. If you get a Boxer don't have their ears boxed though, they are cuter floppy. A Golden Retriever also makes an excellent family dog and is great with Kids. They are a little calmer than Labs. Take your time and find a good breeder in your area. Do not buy a dog from a Pet Shop. They buy from dog brokers and have a poor track record. A good local breeder will have the history of the sire and dam and try to avoid genetic flaws within a breed, such as hip displasia. Good Luck.

I found an article with a list of dog breads and the pros and cons of each with a family. I think it might help. Most people are going to give personal opinions, so this a good outside source to check out.
Edit: decided I wanted to give some personal advice too. I have a pug which is absolutely a great dog. Very very loving, friendly, and sweet. Pugs couldn't hurt a fly, even if they wanted to. I have never seen a mean pug. They even do well with other animals. In fact, the biggest draw back about a pug, could be the fact that they love people too much. They need a lot of people time, and will get lonely and sad if they don't get your attention.
I also have had shih tzu's in the past. These are also great dogs, but seem more delicate than pugs. (pugs are the largest of the toy breed). Also, I have noticed that some shih tzu's can have bad tempers.

A lab from a good tempered mom and dad. We have an eight month old yellow lab. He is SO good with kids. I nanny for 2 toddlers (2 and 3) - they are at my house semi-frequently. Simba will let them do pretty much whatever they want to him - and doesn't complain. For example, last week Simba "played tag" with the kids in the living room, then he layed down to chew on his bone (that the kids gave him) when what do you know - a 2 year old is sitting on his back ... so he gets up and moves somewhere else, always watching her .... but she's relentless - and big brother joins in too ... the three of them played like that for about 30-45 minutes - never once did Simba growl, nip or do anything other than tease them. Labs are pretty well known as gentle dogs - they just want to make you happy. They do lick a lot though!

Basset Hound. Look info up on them they are great family dogs. They are small to medium build and they absolutely love kids. We have two a male and female our male is house broke so he sleeps in our room with us. However, he would prefer to sleep underneath our kids bed. When he gets up in the morning he heads straight for them and gives them a good morning kiss before he heads out the door to go to the bathroom.
They both will kiss and kiss the kids until our kids start pushing them away. Our kids can pull their ears their tails anything they want to do to them and the bassets will just sit there looking at them. They are also very loyal dogs and lazy when they are tired they will sleep and nothing will wake them up.
They are a perfect dog for small kids because with the size they are they will not knock them down if they jump on them and those floppy ears and big feet just attract the kids right away.
GOOD LUCK to you I hope this helps.
Oh yeah we have had our basset since our kids were 1 and 2 they are now 3 and 4 and we have never seen either of the dogs so much as show any teeth towards them.

Labrador Retrievers are awesome from my experience. My brother has 3 and my parents have 2 and they are all very good with small kids and the kids love them. The dogs do especially well if you give them a lot of love when they are young. When I have the availability to get a dog, I will be getting a lab and I have no kids. They are just great dogs.

I love my basset hound. He's been great with my 12 week old daughter. He likes to go up and sniff her sometimes when she is in her swing. Sometimes he even gives her a kiss on her leg.
Although I know that cocker spaniels are thought to be snappy with kids, I had one while I was growing up and she was the sweetest dog ever. I used to get sick a lot and ended up spending many days home from school and she would never leave my side.
Labs are great family dogs too and they have lots of energy for kids.
Whatever you do, just make sure you don't leave a dog unsupervised with small children.

I see alot of labs and yes they are awesome. I have found that the Chocolate Lab is the most docile of all of them. I don't know why but they are not as bouncy as the others. I have a Chocolate and she is awesome. She guards my daughter. She was a young dog when I had my daughter so she really developed a strong bond with her. Almost like she thought that my kid was her puppy. She allows any children to do just about anything to her and has never snapped at anyone. If she gets annoyed she just gets up and moves. My daughter is 6 now and we have tons of children coming to the house and approaching her and she is as gentle as a lamb. However when getting a dog their temperament really depends on the way they are raised. Good luck with finding the perfect dog.

Definatly an english bulldog because they are very sweet, loyal, and tolerant for children of any age but they also know when to intimidate the wrong person if they don't think they should be in your home or around his family. I have a three year old male who lets my seven month old daughter crawl allover him, pull his ears, pinch his extra abundant skin and just lays there like a fat lug and occasionally will sneak a kiss or two from her when he thinks i'm not watching but they are excellent family and house dogs.

There is absolutely no better dog on the planet than an English Bulldog! Go get a pup they're very forgiving toward kids abuse and grow to make wonderful couch potatoes, garbage disposals, and watchdogs all in one.

I have heard that labs are the most patient and gentle dogs around children. Of course, they have to be trained (preferably the dog AND the kids) I had a poodle growing up and adored her but I wasn't real little when we got her.
