My 5 year old little girl, who has been potty trained since she was 2, is now starting to have "accidents". She didn't do this until she started kindergarten this year. She is very intelligent and understands that she should not wet herself, but she still does it! I have taken her to the doctor and nothing is physically wrong with her or her kidneys or bladder. She has not been sexually abused or anything like that. I just don't know what to do! Does anyone know why she may be doing this and/or what I can do to get her to stop. Thanks!

She only wets herself in the daytime. Usually after school is out and she is with me at my work ( I work at a daycare ). She has access to a restroom and goes to it but here lately she ends up wetting herself. I ask her why she did it and she days she doesn't know...

I would bet that even though they have bathroom breaks at school, she's not going. My daughter was in Kindergarten last year and didn't like to go during their breaks, although all of the other kids did, and they had their own girls and boys restrooms right in in their Kindergarten room. Then right after school she'd be making a mad dash for the bathroom once we got home some days. Plus, your daughter might be a little stressed and intimidated because of Kindergarten, this is normal and often when kids are feeling that way it can show up as physical symptoms. For now just have her go as soon as you pick her up from school, and also talk to her teacher for advice. You might also talk to the school counselor. I'm sorry that that one person who answered was so judgmental about you and said something about your education to work in day care, that was rude, but that person tends to do that for a lot of her answers, she must be perfect or something!

Is she wetting herself while awake, or while asleep. If asleep, this is very common. In fact, I had night accidents until I was 12, embarrassed to admit. I finally discovered that it was because I would fall asleep in blue jeans. When I stopped doing that, I stopped having accidents. Maybe it had nothing to do with the blue jeans.... maybe it was simply a mental thing. I'm not sure what actually caused it. I just know it's common.

If she's doing it while awake, this is also pretty common for little girls. it's difficult for them to hold the muscle tight for extended periods of time. school is hard for this reason. some little girls(and some big girls) don't like to use the school restrooms becuase or cleanliness of shyness. She might also be drinking too much of a particular drink. There are so many factors involved, but there is nothing unusual about it at all.

patience....she is going through some changes. Let her be responsible for herself. To change herself and put the wet clothes in the washing machine. Don't help her. Soon she will decide it may be worth going to the toilet. It could just be a cry for attention. If it is still happening in a month and you are sure that there is no medical reason it may be worth trying punishment. Take away a favourite toy etc. Also use positive encouragement. Start a star chart. Every day that is dry she gets a star. After 3 days dry then a small treat. Then 4 days dry then 5 and on and on.

I remember when I was really little, my mom had this idea where she promised that she would put a small amount of her spare change into my piggy bank for every night I managed not to wet the bed. It must have worked into my subconscious somehow - because a few weeks later I had stopped wetting the bed completely. I guess it was just watching how the money built up and imagining all the nice sweets or toys I could buy with it - I would fall asleep with all this in my mind, and it made me determined not to do it. It did the trick for me anyway. lol ;-)

What are you making her wear? Can she remove her clothes by herself to use the bathroom? Are you opposed to having her wear diapers or pull-ups?

Since this is a daytime issue, take measures to protect her from ridicule by being ready to catch the mishap before it becomes blatantly apparent to others - that's why I suggest the pull-ups or diapers. A variety of stresses can cause incontinence in adults - so why not in children? Perhaps the whole concept of school is frightening to her - or more excitement than she was ready for.

Give her time. Don't scold her. When she sees it is not bringing any attention to her, perhaps she'll stop on her own.

It may just be she is getting over exerted during the school day that she sleeps through her body's que to wake up to go potty in the middle of the night.
Try limiting her fluid intake after 6 pm. and make her go potty before bedtime.
I have also heard that foods/drinks with red dye in it may be linked to bed wetting.
Goodnites are always a good thing to have on hand also, or maybe getting up halfway through the night to get her up to go potty.
Good luck!

Maybe she is holding it all day at school? Does she have a restroom in her KG classroom or do they only do scheduled potty breaks? Is she anxious about going "in public" at school and not using the toilet there and then exploding when she gets to work with you?

When children go through stressful situations they tend to regress. Starting school is very stressful. With my son, I encouraged him to try and make it to the bathroom, praised him when he did(do not bribe), and within a few weeks he was fine. Remember that 5 year olds get embarrassed, they know that it is ''wrong'' and that makes it harder when they do have an accident.

Sounds like she is holding it all day in school and wets herself as a result. Or the trauma of starting kindergarten has her stressed enough to revert. She is too young to understand any of this which is WHY she can't tell you...you don't understand this and yet you work in a day care facility? I guess you weren't required to have any education in early childhood development/training huh?

It's stressful being 5 years old and going to school, she will grow out of it. Just be supportive and don't punish her. Send her a clean pair of clothes to school in her back pack.
