Matt3 is basically correct: the Great Khan died and all the leaders of the various "hordes" were called back to Mongolia for his burial, thus putting an end to further expansion and conquest. However, it is also true that the Mongols, so dependent on mobile warfare, could not sustain their horse mounted armies in the arid regions of the Middle East and this also contributed to their first military defeat near Nazareth in modern day Israel.

Nevertheless, the Mongols were abel to retain their holdings in Europe and the Middle East for several centuries and influenced culture throughout the region, including India.
