It all depends on what you personally are looking for. If you want best quality, Panasonic is the best, but they are not so good in low light, so if that is your concern and you do a lot of indoor shots, than Sony is the best. The tape models are better if you want to edit your videos because the compression on the DVs is different than your editing software and you will have a lot of difficulty downloading from a DV to your editing program without special equipment. For ease of use Sony is the best with their touch screen controls, but they don't warranty their LCD screens and if the screen fails you do't have good manual controls. Having said all that, I just bought the Sony mini tape, cheapest model, which is in your price range and I am very satisfied with it.

You can compare prices from almost every merchant and read hundred's of consumer written reviews at cheapest prices search engine.
They compare ebay, walmart, all of the big and small merchants and you can compare by brand, prices, new, used and many other ways.
