To clarify, for those that say it's a cult. Aren't all religions essentially cults? Don't you put money in the collection tray every week? Don't they tell you stuff that they can't possibly prove, and expect you to believe it?

What's the difference?

Dude, it's based on science fiction! Not to mention the fact that you have to pay $$ to get higher up in the church. Regular churches ask you to pay $$ and tell you it's part of the Bible, but you don't get higher up in the church for not dunking in the offering plate.

What happened with Isaac Hayes was enough to convince me these people are nuts. Not a month before he left South Park he was quoted as saying something to the effect of they make fun of everybody and if you can't deal with it that's on you. Then he leaves the show because they dissed Scientology? No way. He was "brainwashed by that fruity little club!"

Other than Tom Cruise's rabid antics, no one would know anything about it unless you were a celebrity or sci fi fanatic.

Tom Cruise prosetlyzed his religion while filming War of the Worlds. If it wasn't for him, they would never have been within 50ft of the set. From what I read, even the director said they were harrassing everyone with their beliefs. I think it was also mentioned somewhere that they completely took over the first aid unit on set.

It gets bad press because it's a cult. They don't allow anyone to have a mind of their own and they require that their followers donate incredibly large percentages of their money to their church. Also, as is true of cults, you aren't allowed to leave once you join. There was one celebrity I read about, I forget who exactly, but he was having marital problems and considering getting a divorce, which most people would be able to do with very little difficulty and their church would have no involvement. The Church of Scientology threatened to rip him up pretty badly reputation-wise and damage his career beyond repair, so he stayed married becasue of the pressure. Only a cult acts likes that. Most people don't like cults because they don't allow any freedom at all.

Come on. Bad press is what sales news papers. The Enquirer and the Global specialise on this. And Scientology views are deeply oposed by many, mostly supresives. So of course is going to get bad press. Don't pay attention to this, it is word of mouth that expands Scientology, not the press.

Because L Ron Hubbard once said that the way to become rich is to start your own religion. It really does appear to be a bit of a sham. I gave it a shot and got sucked into doing a coarse with them. Cost me 1500. Didnt get a thing out of it. That's a lot of money to waste. I think that the really helpful things in life are for free.

Because they bring it on themselves. After all, when one goes looking for opportunities to bring the faith inlto the limelight, sooner or later one is going to do something stupid.

In the case of Scientology, the first stupidity was buying into the L. Ron Hubbard sci-fi paranoia fantasy. Then came to cover-ups regarding people who denounced or tried to leave the group and got stalked and threatened for their trouble. Not to mention the attempt to infiltrate the IRS, and the sue-happy lawyers they bring out of the woodwork whenever someone publicly castrates them.

You wanna buy into his intergalactic fantasy? You go right ahead. But don't expect a lot of respect or paitence.

It doesn't get bad press. Were did you get this idea from?
Maybe 20 or 30 years ago, when it was just starting to grow. But lots of people, celebrities and groups get "bad press" cos they never print anything good about anything. It's all bad news.
They're only interested in creating contraversy and gossip, stirring up fear and upset. That's what sells newspapers.
They gave up on Scientology ages ago and moved onto something else.

It's a cult. They exploit their members out of their hard earned dollars and spoon feed them this banter about alien souls on earth causing trouble.
