If a dentist could have a small light weight camera that showed the image of the patients teeth onto a Laptop screen would it be of any benefit versus the mirror?
If they could show the patient by playing it back to them and explaining what they found would this be something dentists would use?
If the price was low and the tool was no heavier than a mirror with more flexability would they be interested?
Does this exist already?

Intra-oral cameras have been around for many years. They also have lighting to illuminate the scene. Some wireless models exist too, and hopefully will develop better reliability.
Dentists primarily use them just to show matters of interest to patients.
Dental hand mirrors are more useful to a dentist than a camera because they allow access into tight positions, act as to hold bach tissues like cheeks, and also much easier to keep clear of saliva. It also doesn't matter if you scratch a mirror - you simply throw it away.

I think that a camera wouldn't make that much sense.
I mean they would have to somehow navigate the camera about your mouth whilst simultaneously looking at the screen.

Also it would get foggy, you can wipe mirrors of the condensation easily and sterilize them easily but cameras would be tricky if not impossible to clean well inbetween patients.
I also have a feeling that cameras being around all that moisture wouldn't last too long. Even if they were somehow waterproof.. there is still the issue of the fogging of the lens. I don't know how they get around this when they insert tubes into stomachs and anuses etc.

But I also have another few points to make, one, there would be a wire running somewhere which would be a bit of a nuisance, and make it less flexible/movable than a mirror when you think about it. Finally, it would have to be handled carefully so it would probably be likely to break. It is easier to set down a tool and it will stay there whereas a camera with a wire can get caught on stuff or coil about and move, plus you'd need to watch you didn't bang it down too hard or drop it..otherwise ..!

If they do exist (which I don't doubt) my post probably explains why they aren't common.

Oral cameras are popular now. I have bought some from Amazon, about 100 dollars, take picture very easily. My patient can see how serious the oral problem is. Highly recommend this type:Md740 oral camera
