There are a number of reason he could do this....from being too warm to begining signs of a disorder. Best bet is to contact your vets office and just ask them. They may ask to see him or just may tell you why he does it.

Awwwl, I'm sorry your doggie is sick! I have always had dogs growing up and I currently have two chihuahuas (that do NOT shake all the time). I notice when they are acting like you are describing, shaking and cowering away, it's usually because they are hurting. Maybe a hurt paw/leg/back/whatever. If he will let you touch him try moving his legs, joints, etc., check his paw pads, and gently pushing on different areas to see if you can find out what is tender. I would take him to the vet anyways, whether or not he stops shaking in an hour, just to make sure. It will at least give you peace of mind :) Good luck!

If it's a small dog, he could be cold. I have a little dog and they get cold really easily. Try putting a nice blanket over the both of you and see if that helps. I guess he could be scared for some reason. That's the only reasons I know that dogs shake like that.

i couldnt find anything on the web, just other people's opionions. Check your dog's nose. if its dry than it's sick, take it to the vet. Since it just woke up, most likely it was scared, maybe from a bad dream. but most of the time, animals act strange and get scared when their not used to you or your home.

mine does that when he is not feeling well (tummy ache, etc) just keep them warm, comfort them, and give them soft foods until they feel better.
if they are only shaking for a couple of seconds they might be having a bad dream but if they are awake, it's something more serious. just be extra gentle and keep an eye on him!

It doesn't sound normal. Was he abused before you got him? Why don't you take him to a vet?
