I don't know where you live, but I live in Milwaukee, WI in the USA. There are so many people here. It isn't hard to have a hospital and a masjid built at the same time. Grocery stores and Pharmacies are being built as we speak, and there is a lot of remodeling being done at the Children's Hospital here. We need both. You may not believe in God, and that is your loss, but I do, and I believe that it is only through the will of Allah that everything happens. Yeah, we are supposed to do our part, but in the end it is God's ultimate decision. When it's time to be born, none can stop it, and when it is time to die, none can stop it.

to say in greaterindian or hindu terms, There never existed a hospital or school, probably you can understand in India Temples were the place of study so in that terms when the temples were built in india only goal was to bring humanity closer and reduce the sorrows in the life of a person, i dont think there is a better healer than god, one has to look from a greater perspective, every thing in the world has its own meaning and cause...
So builiding hospitals and schools is not everything but but building humanity is everything

In olden days the rich uses to build temples Masjid etc and donate liberally so that daily many poor people can feed there. Since what was offered as feed was given as an offering to god before feeding every one accepted it as a grace from god and no prestige issue was involved. There are still many temples, masjid and Gurudwaras which do this Later government interfering with religious institutions and appointing government officials as trustees has brought in lot of corruption. secondly the willingness to donate for poor has also reduced.
Schools can be built by private individual provided you don't have to go through a lot of red tape and corruption. The same goes for hospitals also which have become a source of converting blackmoney to white.

We have more than enough hospitals and schools as we have temples and masjids. What is lacking is humanity.
Humanity is not donating a handsome amount to your local temple. It is not at all giving sakat during Ramadan. It isn't anyway giving a Rs.10/- to a way side begger.
Humanity is our outlook. It is your resolve not to desire what belong to others. It is your respect for your fellow beings irrespective of their cast, creed, religion, race, color, gender, financial conditions, social status, educational standard, occupation and political affiliation. It is your determination to work as long as you can without worrying who will benefit from it. It is a realisation that you are not master of anybody or anything.
It is the recognition that you are not slave to anybody or anything.

Both are needed. Hospitals are needed for modern day people.
Schools were there in Gurukul. But temples were the most useful in ancient days, when people understood the purpose of human life much better.
There were spiritual masters who understood the science of life, with personal experience and observing live people, so treatment for sick persons was very easy for them... the science of life is Ayurveda. Today, medical science is taught by tearing open dead people, and study is about sickness ! Even many doctors are not really healthy. Not so in ancient days. Every spiritual master was extremely healthy !
Today, temples are of not much use, because modern men are not interested in purpose of life, since even earning for food keeps them struggling for whole life ! So doctors, hospitals and schools are all very much needed for keeping ahead in this fast race of survival.

In the mahabarata or ramayana - both are itihasas - meaning actual happenings - there is no account in these epics about temples - in those days there were no temples at all!! but there were doctors, hospitals, ayurveda everything you have asked for.
I leave it here for your conclusion.

`yES, Hospitals and Schools are any day preferable.
People who can spend, would rather make one-time investment on Temples and Masjids because it gratifies their EGO to see their name attached with the building, which seems to be permanent.{ Birla mandir}
Schools and hospitals require constant supervision and efforts to keep them functioning usefully.
Society needs charitable persons of both kinds!

Does it have to be one or the other? Can't we do it all? We do need hospitals, schools and to care for the helpless and homeless. God is eternal - forever. So while we need to do those things, we also need to worship God, as he requires, because life does not end at human death - we also need to be concerned about our eternal life.
