Imaginary

There are two types of "entities". One is a ghost, the other is a spirit. The ghost is the energy of a once living person that, for some reason, has been unable to rest. The spirit, however, is something else. They were never alive in our understanding of the "soul" and they are not dead. I've seen one of them. I hope never to see it again. It wasn't a good spirit.

Notice I say types of entities. Those are very broad terms. They can be broken down further by identifying exact types. Almost like you would identify Species within a Kingdom in the biological world.

I believe some ghosts are exactly that, a person without a body. I also believe that sometimes we may be looking at a parallel universe that exists along side ours and we are seeing living people in another dimension.

In my experience, there are lots of kinds.
The most common seem to be simply echoes. These are sort of like recorded messages that just get played over and over. There's no spirit really behind them, or if it is, it's not a sentient spirit.
Then there are earthbound spirits who are pretty cranky about things and want to make living people miserable.
Then there are non-human malevolent spirits which are just downright dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

You could call them echoes and discarnate entities if you wanted.
