in the bible there is a passage that says somthing like "and will you go worship the gods of the cananites, or down the river and worship those gods?" it doesnt sound like this "one true god" is saying all other gods a fake to me. even the first commandment says "you will not worship any other gods" this doesnt sound like all other gods are fake or nonexistant.

This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ. John 17:3 Modern Translation of Bible

John 17:3  And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. King James Bible

Jesus spoke these things, and, raising his eyes to heaven, He is praying or talking to his Father, what does He say: " that they might know thee the only true God" So Jesus recognizes that his Father is the one and only True God.

you're right. apparently the Bible god believed in rival gods as he sure complained and got nasty if his Hebrews worshiped other gods. if the Bible god were the only god he'd have had nothing to fret about.

Jos 24:20 If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.

Deu 32:16 They provoked him to jealousy with strange [gods], with abominations provoked they him to anger.

Jer 5:19 And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these [things] unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land [that is] not yours.

hehehe read atreadia's response. it's a contradiction of my response and yet both of us quote Bible verse. fancy that.

There are numerous verses in the bible that reference other gods. Exodus 20:3 "You shall have no other gods before me."
Exodus 20:2-4 (in Context) Exodus 20 (Whole Chapter) -- God does not want us to allow other things to take priority over him -- sports, work, alcohol, drugs, ourselves. He wants to be the focus of our daily lives.

Isaiah 45:5 I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me:

Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no saviour.

Isaiah 44:8 Fear ye not, neither be afraid: have not I told thee from that time, and have declared it? ye are even my witnesses. Is there a God beside me? yea, there is no God; I know not any.

Isaiah 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.

Isaiah 45:21 Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none
beside me.
