Hadn't heard that but if true, it would be the same reason we gave missiles to Iraq back in the 80s. It's called short-sighted thinking coupled with our American belief that others are just like us. But you know neither the Japanese nor the Iraqis share the same values...we always seem to forget that other cultures really are different and they think differently. Americans like many Europeans tend to have a longer memory of good things others do for us. I don't see that in other non-Christian cultures. It's like we are the enemy and they just take what they can get. Scary.

The U.S. didn't. Germany trained the army and Britain the navy -- and that was 40 years before the Second World War.
