What makes a good life? Having a home, family, friends, satisfying career, healthy relationships, meeting all your needs, etc. I agree, to a certain extent. As a Christian, I also have joy in the bad times, when everything seems to be going haywired and turned upside down. It is in those times when believing and putting your trust in God carries you through; when nothing or no one is there to understand you and comfort you, God, in His Word, PROMISES He's there for you no matter what and offers you HOPE.
HOPE is where its at. If you are an Atheist you believe in no God; that we were formed from nothing, for no reason other than to try to survive in this crazy world, and that our death marks the end. OK, believe that if you wish but as a Christian, I am commissioned to offer others HOPE--for a better life that won't just end when we drop dead.
I believe and I challenge you to argue against this thought: Wouldn't it be sad if you live your life "to the fullest", achieving all your dreams, reaching your highest goals and then having it all end in nothingness--because even if you die and leave a legacy and impact other's lives, that'll eventually fade away into nothing as well. Wouldn't everything be in vain; what would be the point of all our struggles; if my personhood ends the day that i die then what stops me and the rest of society from commiting suicide when having bad days. Wouldn't that be a depressing society. But thanks God that our own human nature seeks to live--we love life, at least most of us, its how we're wired--to survive. That's how God created us to be and that is why He offers us eternal life.
I don't want to force my beliefs on anyone and I don't approve of others who try to, all I want to do is offer you a better alternative, a different perspective. I highly recommend you pick up a bible and seriously sit down and read it without any prejudgments--read it with an open mind and asking God, even when you don't belive in Him, ask Him anyway to reveal to you what truth is, and I guarantee, 100%, that if you come to Him with a sincere heart He WILL make you understand and see life from a different perspective--His perspective. Just have an open mind, and see what the fuss is all about this God.
May God Bless You and give you understanding if and when you ask Him!

Well, it is just that. Christians are not supposed to judge. We believe that that is God's job. I have read a lot of hateful things from Christians as well as Atheists. So I think that us Christians DO need to remember what we believe and let Atheists and all the other beliefs/religions out there believe what they want. Stop being so hateful and hurtful. Although I know it is hard. After all we are all only human.

Well said. I would really like to know why some Christians ask questions that imply that atheists must be cruel or depressed or sadistic (or all three). To make it worse, they completely ignore a half dozen good answers from atheists, and instead pick as the best answer someone that just repeats the false premise with even more vitriol.

As a Christian, I don't believe that you have a horrible life. It might be better than mine in many ways. But, you must understand that Christians do believe in a heaven and we believe we will go there when we die - from that perspective, we don't want to see anyone suffer after death--which is what we believe will happen to those who do not believe.
Your question was very respectful until the end. You were so nice and polite and stated your case...I thought, great a good dialog with someone who believes differently. Should be interesting.
Then in the last couple of sentences you got rather insulting. I have no desire to damn you to hell, that isn't my call, and your comment about just because our entrie religion believes something doesn't make it so....why did you degenerate into being insulting when you started out so nice?

Perhaps when you believe you've been chosen by God to be part of an exclusive group, it's easy to feel superior to others. I do think that even the loveliest Christians in the world feel this way subconsciously, and that the worst Christians are the ones who feel the need to broadcast this 'superiority' to the world.

I can not speak for most Christians. because I cannot say that I know what most Christians think.
I do not think that a horrible live depends on whether you believe or not, I could give a scripture verse that agrees with that but i wont.
I don't think you would be impressed with scriptures.
we all have our problems, it is how we deal with those problems that make a difference.
I have a good live now but I have had my up and down, i like the up times better.
blaming our problems on god is just another cop out.

Because it's human nature to think that someone who does not have what you have has a horrible life. It's part of the "make myself feel better about my life and my position in comparison to other people" mentality. A lot of Christians just can't imagine life without knowing God. When you have no concept of something that you can relate to, you just dismiss it as BS which leads to all kinds of other blanket generalizations.
It's not just Christians who do this, it's all kinds of people. That's part of our DNA, to join a group of people and then act like we're better than everybody else because we are a part of that group of people.

I am an Atheist. I do not care what others think of me. I am honest try to be kind and helpful to others. The rest of how I live my life is my business.
For the most part Atheists do not ask questions. They answer them and when they do ask it is in hopes that by asking they will cause others to think about what they believe and perhaps have an "awakening".

Many of them believe that you can't have a good life without meaning. Many atheists would agree to this. However, they then go on to say that without God, your life can have no meaning. That's where we differ. It's because they're coming at it from that standpoint that they think we must have horrible lives.
