You'll need a combo: gel (not mousse - that can make your hair "puffy" and defeat the purpose), bobby pins the same color as your hair (any hair supply store should have a good variety - if you have a "Sally's" in town, I'd start there) and a good strong but not sticky hairspray (I like the Aussie brands).
While your hair is still slightly damp, put your hair in the p/t. Locate the problem spot hairs. Take the pony tail out and gel the area you found to be the most problematic. You don't need a ton of gel, but don't be afraid of it ;) Immediately put the p/t back on. Wrap it as tight as you can with the p/t holder. Wait a few minutes until your hair is good and dry.
If you have any stragglers, put the bobby pins in - since you've probably never done this before, here's how to hide them: open them slightly and put the longer bottom part underneath your hair. Slide the upper part just underneath the very top few strands of your hair so it's not just a bobby pin on top of hair. It should be at least minimally covered. Give a light spray to your hair with the h/s. If you can, buy a trial size h/s and ask your mom to carry it as well as a few extra bobby pins for you. Your hair is just short enough that you may have to "touch up" a few times during the evening.
G/L and I hope this goes well LOL! What young men and women have to go through to please us moms, huh? I only have girls - instead of worrying about their hair length, I'll be worrying about how to get them to talk to me when they're teens!
Have fun :)

When your hair is almost dried, spray it lightly with some hairspray. The gently comb it into the ponytail. Finish it off with another light spray of hairspray.
Putting the ponytail in while the hair is damp, not wet, will have it finish drying with the hair being pulled into place. When spraying the hairspray, keep it at least 8 inches away from your head because you want smooth, not shinny "plastic". You should look well groomed then.
Also- once you have your ponytail in, use a hand held mirror to check out the back of your neck. You can gently use your face shaver to "clean up" the back of your neck for the little stray hairs that make you look hairy and ungroomed. You will surprise your mom with how well it will make you look.

brush it out (all knots gone)
if you have curly or wavy hair borrow a straightner from a chick friend and straighten it, if you cant find one dont worry about it it would just be a lot easier
then put gel in your hair, lots of it, the whole bottle if nessicary, it'll always wash out
COMB the gel through your hair! comb comb comb! it looks nice and neat that way
once every hair is in place comb all the hair back once more to gather it into your hand and put the pony tail on it
then either smooth a little more gel over it to starting from your forehead to the end of your tail, or do the same thing with mousse, or spray it with hair spray

I think what you should do is use hair gel and tie your hair back in a ponytail.

use gel..apply it when your hair is wet and slick it back with it, but don't use way too much because some gel flakes.
Wonder if you could get away with wearing a beret....
It isn't fair of your mom to tell you that by the way....

your right...don't cut it for one event...i use suave or aussie mousse...mostly suave it works great you only need a small amount (if you have thick hair you might need just a bit more)...be careful though if you use to much you won't be able to get it in a ponytail hope this helps...good luck! :)

mix a little (very little) gel w/ water and slick it back and then put it in a ponytail, it will stay and not have that hard crunchy look.
or use mega hold hairspray, people will probably know you're using hairspray, but it will stay.

use some pomade(american crew or citre shine) or good gel to help pull back those loose strands. then comb back, and layer your hair with anti frizz gel. then youre ready to go!

Sally's Beauty Supply, look in the phone book for one. They also have them at Walgreen's for 15 dollars, if you have one near you.
