I want sensible answers, please don't answer with " when she begins to smell". I have concerns about putting more chemicals on children before they need them. My daughter is ten.

I started in grade six after one of my classmates made a rude comment. I wish my mom had got me started before it got to the point that my classmates had to comment!

There is a new deodorant/anti-perspirant from Adidas that doesn't contain any aluminum- it uses absorbant cotton fibres that battle odor and sweat. It's great for odor and it's about 75% effective for sweat (from my perspective). You might want to try that product if you're concerned about aluminum. By the way, aluminum is also the ingredient that reacts with sweat to turn clothes yellow in the armpit. With the Adidas one you won't get any yellow stains.

You really should notice when her body chemistry begins to change and she begins to need a deodorant. However, realistically, waiting until that point can be a problem, because if she smells like she needs deodorant to you, chances are others have noticed, as well, and kids can be very cruel about things like that.

I would say a good rule of thumb is that when you need to have the "special" hygiene talk, it's time for deodorant as well. What I mean by that is that sooner or later you will need to have a talk with her about cleanliness and hygiene during periods, shaving underarms and legs, careful face washing to keep skin in good condition, etc. It seems like when you have that talk, it would be really natural to both buy her a razor and show her how to shave, as well as buy some deodorant and talk to her about that.

If you want a hard and fast rule, it's hard for me to give one, as everyone's body is different, so their needs differ, as well. I would say somewhere in the 11-13 range for daily deodorant use, but that's just based on the experience of myself at that age, the experiences of my friends, and the experiences of my friends' daughters who are at that tricky place in life.

I wish you luck, as it must be hard to try and figure all that stuff out :)

I didn't start until I was 11. I started puberty when I hit 13. I didn't get armpit hair until I was 14.
It all depends, honestly, when they start to smell.
Most usually start when they hit middle school though.
Dove is a great product for the less odor producing people. I am not one among those lucky people. I use Arrid. I think that would be too harsh for someone that young though.

If your daughter is ten try sprinkling some baking soda in her bath water and have her dust herself with baby powder. There are some nice deodorant soaps out there....other wise your baby may need some deodorant ...DO NOT GET TEEN SPIRIT it does not work...i think you may be able to find all natural deoderant for your little one

Really, they need it once they think they need it. Once a girl hits puberty, her underarm sweat is noticeably more odorful than the rest of her sweat. As soon as she asks for it is a good idea. Really, if she's ten she should be able to make her own choices. I know that when I was ten, my mother refused to let me wear it and, three years later, I am still referred to as Stinky Sarah. If she wants it, she should have it. Fifth grade is about the right time; later if she's less physically matured than her peers, earlier if she's more matured than her peers.

USe all natural deodorant that contains no aluminum particles or excessive chemicals because it is safer for your kiddies. And of course, put it on them before they smell, or change their diet, or make them bathe hourly.
