I have a friend that wants to do mission work and wants to use his skills in construction. please advise?

Mission trips are popular, but what's more important to you? Is it the "mission" or the "trip?"
If it's the mission, that would generally be better accomplished by not wasting all the time on the trip. There are always people in need nearby. You don't have to travel to find them.
