I'm 14 years old and 5'6" tall. I weigh anywhere from 110-116 on a given day. I've always been insecure about my appearance, and I've since lost a pretty dramatic amount of weight. Most people tell me I'm skinny, but I cant help but feel like theyre telling me what I want to hear. My ribs do stick out and I HATE it. Its not because Im weirdly skinny, its just I have a weird ribcage. But the thing Im worried about is lately people have been telling me I need help because I'm showing signs of anorexia whether I realize it or not. I eat though. Just, not enough. On average, I'm lucky if I get 500 calories in a day. Is this bad? Help. Any advice, information, ways to cope, anything would help. Thanks

The only reason I have the strength to admit it to myself that I might have an eating disorder is because I've previously had one.

Hi! I'm also 5'6 and weigh (a little more than you) 115-120 on average. Difference is, I'm 21! I'm going to med school next fall, and with people telling me similar things ("you're too skinny!") coupled with feeling chubby on occassion, I've looked into the issue. Your weight is not, in itself, unhealthy... but weight doesn't tell you much. How do you feel? Do you get tired easily? If your ribs are "sticking out" noticably, chances are you ARE under your prime weight (as there should be a sub-cutaneous (under skin) layer of fat). In any case, 500 calories is FAR too little. I'd recommend seeing a physician who can recommend a higher calorie diet. At 14, you need more calories than full-grown adults to grow and develop properly, and the minimum recommended for ADULTS is 1000. Some quick tips, stay away from caffeine, make sure you get your carbs, and eat proteins (this is what makes most of the "stuff" in your body). Nuts are great for this if you're not a meat fan. Those health bars (power bars, etc.) are also great (and yummy!) little calorie bundles. You don't get enough calories, but if you truly WANT to fix the problem then you probably don't have an "eating disorder," as those are really mental problems with physical, weight-related symptoms. Good luck!!

Anorexics from my knowledge tend to completely deny anything is wrong whatsoever and you're no where near that. You know you're skinny and that you could possibly have a disorder. That's a step, so I would say you're okay. You're also fairly young which means that there's a lot of weight changes and things still to come. If you're concerned, the best option would be to have a doctor consult you on the issue. They can help you find a diet or eating regiment that will help you maintain the ideal weight for your age and height. You shouldn't worry yourself to much, but if you continue to lose weight I would deffinitely go see a doctor or the school nurse or someone, they have the kind of knowledge to help you, your friends can tell you what they think, but they're not doctors.
Good luck!

Eating only 500 calories a day is NOT a good idea. As a young growing girl, you need to be eating atleast 1500 calories a day to make sure your bones grow, and that you develop into a healthy adult. If you continue at the route you're in, you will experience fatigue, hair loss, anemia, heart arrhythmias, and even death. Please go talk to your doctor or someone that can help you get through your body image problems as well as any psychological disorders you may have (depression, anxiety, ocd are very common in anorexics). If you really want to stay thin, do it the right way by eating a balanced diet and engaging in physical activity....like sports.

hi there...
i know how you feel b/c i have lived it...it does sound like you have somewhat of an eatign disorder. ed's aren't always full blown anorexia or bulimia...i can go weeks where i eat 500-700 cals a day and then weeks where i eat normal and a lot. I purge and binge sometimes, but not every day of my life. eating disorders are preoccupation with food that is unnormal...every day I think about food and feel guilty, feel fat when people tell me i'm not etc. even though i am not hardcore about it, my thoughts about food rule my life.
If you think you may have a problem and people think you do, you should talk to somene. 500 cals a day is definitly not enough to stay healthy and energetic. if you dont like your rib cage stickin out eat more. i think you alreayd know you have a problem which is a really really good step! ask your parents if you can talk to a pshychologist or someone...it really helps to get everything out (not even just about that). you obviously have poeple who care about you so thats a good start, admitting it to them would help a lot too. good luck :)

well you height and weight are not too bad just about right for a thin girl. But 500 calories are not enough for you to be getting the food values you need. Remember some day you will probably want a child and have to be healthy for that. You should be eating three times a day with fruit and vegetables as well as meat. Some carbs are necessary as well.

I have the same problem, but i eat a normal diet, 1500-2500 calories a day. Just try to keep the pounds on. But don't let people scare you like that. That's what people do to me all the time, and i know i don't have that problem. If you mentally don't know your anorexic, then you're not.
