d.c electronics question. what is the theoretical rating of the combined source if they are connected in parallel?

Voltages in parallel stay the same, but the current is doubled. In your case that would be 25v @ 6A. If you hook the two in series, then the voltages add but the current does not change, or 25v + 25v = 50v @ 3 A.

25V @ 6A. Volts do not change but the current will double. Only voltages of the same rating can be combined in parallel.

The higher voltage source will drive current into the lower voltage source

If two conductors are hooked up parallel, the voltage remains the same.
