When do people decide that there is no point of moving any further, or trying any further? When do people make the decion that they had reached the end of whatever journey they were going through (e.g. marriage, job, life, giving up on a person, giving up on a beleif, migration, quiting smoking, quiting a strong habit). What are the elements responsible for making that final decision and sticking by it?

When you know the answer let me know. Mind you when you start to get nasty headaches from banging your head against that brick wall then its definitely time to stop, that is unless you are a masochist.

In my opinion is has something to do with giving up hope that it can work. I personally make a conscious decision. When I have tried everything I can think off, talked it through and notice that I run in circles, it's time to move on.

The bad habits are slightly different, though. With them you will just have to keep working on them. I am quite good at making tough decisions, but haven't got the willpower to give up some of the bad habits - unfortunately.

You should only really give up when you've explored every possible solution to your problem. This may take days, weeks, months or even years. It also depends on what the problem is, as to how long the solution takes to be found. Some people search their entire lives for an answer to their problems, and still don't get an answer. I hope this answer inspires you to keep looking for the answers to YOUR problems. GOOD LUCK!!!

It is really a battle between the emotions/heart and the brain!!! It is easier to listen to your heart, but it is better to listen to your brain! I've just started running and I am by no means, shape or form an athlete. Now my heart tells me to stop constantly and stop this pain, but the brain convinces me to keep on as I would gain more from doing it than quitting!

Each thing you mentioned giving up on would almost have to have a different approach for it. I would hardly put most of those things you might want to call it quits on in the same category
