Thirteen is generally considered to be unlucky in Christian folklore, primarily because it equaled the number at the Last Supper. Christianity is the dominant religion in the west, so the thirteenth floor is usually left out. Most Christians do not know why thirteen is unlucky, but it is a widely held belief. Other cultures, including Russian Judaism, believe it is a lucky number.

In some buildings with 13 or more floors the numbering system will skip the number 13 because of the widespread superstition about 13 being unlucky. (Same idea as Friday the 13th bothering some people.)

You're right. Most buildings skip #13 in their floor numbering. However, I did live in a high-rise in Chicago on the 13th floor. It is rare, though.

It's unfortunate that some people who design elevators just can't count. That doesn't inspire much confidence in their elevators, does it?

I think one of the early buildings with a thirteenth floor burned, That floor alone was destroyed, and the people on it killed. Superstition did the rest.
