Hi there;

Yes, I have had my wisdom teeth removed surgically. The actual process of extraction is not painful. What you will feel is the pressure the dentist will use to extract the tooth and no other. This feeling is, well, odd in that you think "my goodness is my jaw going to go too"? But it doesn't and you will be fine.
I suggest that you do the following to alleviate your nerves. Take three deep cleansing breaths. Fully inhale; slowly exhale three times in secession. This will release your body’s natural endorphins. (Natural body pain killers). Then let your mind go to a peaceful place.
Your dentist will first use a local to numb the area where the deep pain meds will be applied. If you have needle anxiety mention this to your dentist before hand. There are methods of anxiety relaxation that modern dentists use now which will minimize the anxiety you are feeling.
The pain that everyone talks about is after the procedure. Like any invasive surgical procedure there will be a certain amount of discomfort but that can be controlled with medications. Take the medications EXACTLY as the dentist prescribes them. Do not miss one as you will be trying to "catch up" on the pain. The trick is to keep yourself from hurting too much that you get overtired.
Do not use straws as the sucking motion will affect the healing process of your gums.
Stick to cool compresses and ice bags to the outside of your face to reduce any swelling that may occur. Swelling is rare but it happened in my case. The discomfort will only last for about 12 hours. The next morning you can use OTC pain killers to manage any discomfort. After about 4 days you will be right as rain again and with the knowledge that you will never have to have that wisdom tooth pulled again. :)

Oh, you have an impacted tooth. I had one of those, only it wasn't infected. Here's the deal: some people like to go under and be asleep during the process, which you can do. I decided not to, even though I really dread the dentist. The only thing that really hurts are the shots that they give you to numb you up. It's a very strange feeling, but they don't take long to do. All I felt during the procedure was a lot of pressure. The dentist actually had to crack the impacted one in half to get it out, but he said it was nothing to worry about. It only took about 15 minutes for the whole procedure, and the pain didn't start until the numbing shots wore away. It's really a throbbing kind of pain, but they prescribe good painkillers for you. I had Vicodin.

Anyway, I don't mean to ramble, but for someone who really fears the dentist, getting my wisdom teeth pulled wasn't as traumatic as I thought it would be. Really, worrying and waiting was the worst part.

No it isn't that bad at all. I had all 4 and 1 extra tooth taken out by a oral surgeon. They knock you out and it is all over in about 20 minutes or so.If you get some pain meds take one before the numbness wears completely off and it won't hurt much at all. One important thing DO NOT use a straw cause that is what causes dry socket and that is very painfull. Don't eat anything with seeds for while and avoid anything you think might get stuck in the incision. Really you will do great and you will be glad cause if your teeth are bothering you then that will be gone.

Mine were over an inch long, at an angle of 45 degrees, covered by a thin layer of skin. Lokal anastecia took 15 minutes. Removal took 5 minutes. No pain, just a funny feeling.
If your dentist uses a syringe for anastecia, it will feel like your tounge is swelling, take it easy, it doesn't. Just focus on breasthing.
The most common reason for pain is that your dentist is unpatient an don't wait for the anastecia to sett in. If it hurts, ask for more(either time or drugs).
Also the painkillers for later: they often take half an hour or so to start working, so take a dose before the anastecia wears out.

Don't hold out hope for your tooth.Your situation is actually easy! Check this:
I had 4 compacted wisdom teeth. When I was 16 & they started moving, they were actually growing sideways.
I was 18 when I finally had them all removed at once because I couldn't take the pain anymore! It was a surgical procedure that lasted a couple of hours. After it was over, the surgeon told me if I had waited any longer to have them removed, they would have had to break my jaw bone to dig the roots out. OUCH!!
I was on heavy meds for a week! Then there was an incident with one of the meds. My mom couldn't wake me up after giving me a little piece of a pain killer & the paramedics had to come out.... My face was so swolen that I didn't have room in my mouth for my tongue. How embarrassing!
Ok, if that wasn't enough, all this happened, yup, the day before Thanksgiving!

There is no hope. Wisdom teeth need to be removed before they cause your teeth to become crooked. Since it is not fully emerged they are going to have to cut it out. Depending on how deep it is they may have to stitch it back up. I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out at the same time. 2 of the areas had to be stiched back together. It was extremely painful and took about a full week to recover. Sorry I couldn't comfort you lol

Everyone I know who has gone "under" has had a horrible time recovering. Me, I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed with just local anesthetics, and was eating pizza 36 hours later, I'm serious, and two of them were impacted like yours is. Don't worry about it, you will be absolutely fine unless for some reason you choose to go under. You'll be fine. PLUS they will offer you some happy gas or prozac type downers that will make you calm and not worried about it. Good luck bro!

Get rid of it. It can become extremly infected. Then, it will be even more painful. You don't need your wisdom teeth. It can get worse. It is sore the doc removes them, but that is really it. Just ask to be knocked out with gas or an IV. I woke up with a big bruise on my face, so I was glad for the drugs.

I had six removed (two from the top, four from the bottom) and actually it didn't hurt as much as I thought. Stay on the drugs they give you! Try to avoid a condition known as dry socket where the clot in the socket from the tooth dissolves prematurely, leaving the nerve exposed to the air. It hurst like a...well, you know. Keep the gauze in for the first day or two, lay off the chunky foods, and you will heal in no time.
