I have a lab/hound mix and I was wondering how many times a day he should pooh at 6 months of age. It seems that he only goes two or three times a day now, when it was like 5. He is still eating very healthy and still very playful, just had his check up and he is okay. Just wondering if this is normal or if I am not walking him long enough when I take him out to pee. Also he gets hiccups at least twice a day..is this just some growing hiccups? lol I have never had a dog before and I forgot to ask the vet this when I went. Thanks for all your help!

You seem to have a healthy dog and you are doing just find taking care of your puppy. When they are at this stage you have to pay attention to every change in their behavior. It will sound gross but this is a good tip for you, look at his poop, if their is something wrong in his digestion you will first notice it in his pooh. The normal color should be somewhat brownish and very solid, not like a rock but it needs to keep together. When you see diarrhea you know something is wrong and if so make sure it has lots of liquid and bring him to the vet asap. Again it is gross but to make sure see if the pooh is moving, puppies sometimes have problem with worms and they will eat a lot, still play and look big but from the inside they do have worms. The pooh is one of the keys to see how healthy your dog is. I imagine that now he goes just twice a day because you are training him on a routine. He will know when it is time to pooh and this is why you should keep him in a routine, he needs to know when he is out to play and when he is out to pooh, or else you will walk him and he will not go and as soon as you are inside he will pooh right there and perhaps you were out for long waiting for it to go. Observe his moves and call your doctor regarding the hiccups, they might tell you on the phone what it could be. don't forget to brush his teeth, seriously , start now that he is young so that he gets used to it,dogs get many internal diseases because of bacteria in their gums. Take care of your puppy, you are doing a great job!

A dog should poop at least 3 times a day. 2 times is a little low, but if it only happens a couple times a week, I wouldn't worry as long as he is eating a drinking as usual. You are probably feeding your dog a high end food and that is why he doesn't poop 5 times a day (that is a sign of poor food, full of fillers). And lots of puppies get the hiccups daily, that is not unheard of...my puppy always had the hiccups, they are so funny! But, of course, as with anything, you can always call the vet to ask a quick question.

After puppyhood, they should pooh the same number times they eat a day. Feed the dog once, he should pooh once. Feed the dog twice, he should pooh twice. Etc, etc. He should have constant access to water (unless he pees on the floor at night, then withhold water after 6pm and give it back in the morning), and because of this, should be taken outside once in the morning, once before bed, and after every meal.

A dog after he gets more mature, not so much a puppy will start holding his pee and poo longer than before. It sounds pretty normal.
