Yes. LOL

I know what you mean, though. I have two children, and my first child came out looking like a monkey (I've never seen that much hair on a newborn in my life.) Looking at his baby pictures now, I can laugh about it, but at the time, if someone had said "My gosh, that is one ugly hairy child!" I would have been just heartbroken.

Honestly speaking, there are almost no beautiful newborn babies. They're red, wrinkly, have bumps on their faces, have misshapen heads, have legs and arms disproportionally skinnier than the rest of the body, sometimes have crossed eyes, sometimes have hair sticking straight up.... and every one of their mothers thinks they are the most beautiful thing ever to grace the planet.
And after nine months of carrying this baby inside her, nurturing her, planning for her, and then the time and pain of chiildbirth, she's earned the right to not have to deal with people telling "honest opinions". She doesn't want your honest opinion. She wants to hear that her baby is beautiful. It won't hurt you to lie, but it will hurt her if you tell the truth. Trust me.

If you can't fake it and lie, at the very least, come up with something neutral to say, so the parents will hear what they want to hear. I'm a big fan of "She's something, isn't she?" It means nothing, but the person I'm telling it to takes it however they want to. "I've never seen another baby like her" is another one (particularly if you're looking at what you're sure is the ugliest little red ball of baby you've ever seen). Pointing out the obvious works too. Things like "Would you look at all that hair!" or "Those little fingers are so long!" work well, too. In normal conversation, this would all sound odd, but it's a good way to get around telling the ugly truth (no pun intended) without technically having to lie.

ALL newborns are ugly. It's a known fact. But it is rude to say so. The parents are already thinking about the baby's wrinkled ears, and hoping the head rounds out. They don't need someone putting their flesh and blood down.
Say things like "the baby has nice colour", "Such soft skin", "What a head of hair!", " Beautiful eyes".... things that don't quite focus on the actual appearance of the baby.
Of course if you're not averse to lying, do that too!

yep it is, but mostly all newborns are ugly I was and so were many others besides babies don't get cute until after a couple days their out the nook maybe even months! now if they're still ugly after that then lie your *** off!! or avoid the question or manipulate it by saying things like look how pretty her/his hair is or eyes or whatever you can think about at that exact moment so at least you won't be lying completley or say "pretty as can be expected" adorable like a bunny" pretty just like it's mommy" now if the mother isn't then your out of luck just some suggestions you can ponder over,

Yes it is rude cause all newborn babies are cute in their own way. Find something nice to say or don't say anything at all.

I'd say telling anyone they're ugly is kind of rude, but if you don't want the answer, you shouldn't ask the question...

Just say he/she is breathtaking or some other type of comment that could be construed as a compliment even if you truly feel the other way. That way you don't hurt their feelings, while still not lying.
