I need a better job! I'm 45 and doing apartment maintenance,
making $10 an hour. I have a bachelor's degree in political science from 1985. $10 an hour is an embarassment.
I want to go back for a master's, I am able and willling, but
it comes back to the question, in what field.

Because you got your bachelor's degree so long ago, you may not be able to transfer much of that into your master's program. This might actually be a good thing, though, because it gives you a totally fresh start. Rather than trying to find something that fits in with your bachelor's degree, try finding a major that really interests you now. Political science might have interested you in 1985, but what are you passionate about today? What would you like to be doing in two years when that Master's degree is in your hand?

PS - I think you'll be surprised at how much you'll enjoy being back in school, and how many students in their 40s and 50s are enrolled in colleges these days. So many people try to put off going to school by using the fact that they aren't 20-something anymore. What they don't realize is that time is still time. And it's still moving forward no matter what. So in a few years, no matter what your age, you can still have a degree or not depending on what you decide to do. Either way, time will roll on, so might as well get that education and have it. Good luck!

I agree with "fruitnroo." You need to do a little soul searching and find out what you are most interested in. And people should never stop going to school. I hope to still be taking a class for enrichment when I'm 80 years old. Keeps you thinking. Keeps you LIVING. Also, you shouldn't feel like whatever you decide to do next is final. Ten years down the road it's perfectly okay to do something new. And remember. . . money isn't everything. Can you make it on ten dollars an hour? Do you like your current job? These are things to consider also.

Why on Earth are you asking us Bozo's??? It's up to you to figure out what you are interested in and pays well. Do you really expect us to pick your career? No wonder you are doing maintenance for $10 per hour!

Environmental Engineering is a hot field to get into. Another one is cleaning up meth labs in homes.
