Just look all around us, we are all products of it!! It's in music, television, internet, commercials, magazines.....it is all about looks...it's an obsession! I think a balance between both is healthy. It doesn't matter if you have talent or not, just swing your big **** around or your bulging biceps and you've got it! We need to get back to what is important again, I hope soon!!!

Wow what a question. I don't think that there was ever an era of characteristics vs. looks. Admit it you are initially atttacted to a person because they display something you find attractive. It may be personality or eyes or butt or whatever but attraction starts with something that draws your attention to someone and that can only start with superficial things. I have thought many people were attractive. Now does that mean I want to date them? No! I have met many men that I thought were drop dead gorgeous and then they opened their mouth and their personality made them ugly. Looks can only take someone so far and then something has to back it up.
Now I have also met men that I didn't give a second thought to and then I got to know them and I thought they were totally sexy.
I also think that nothing has changed in the world and it has always been this way. That is just the way it is.

This is very easy to describe if you are tuned into the real world. Look at television for instance. Everything on tv has to be the best and the most beautiful. Look at the famous singers these days like Brittany Spears and the front page of glamour magazines. It's all about looks. Diets galore these days, everyone has their own version of the perfect diet that will make you slim and beautiful. Hair dye that will make your hair look as wonderful as the model on tv. It's all a bunch of hooey. If we emulate ourselves after all the tv stars and Hollywood Glamour we would be broke and still be who we are inside. Hope this answer is descriptive enough for you.

lets look at society in general. Mainstream has become so obsessed with the physical over everything else.
Talk shows may show the most vile, annoying person in the world...but if the person he has wronged is overweight...the overweight person gets more trouble for that than the original person.
Personalities, intelligence, and traits people look for in a mate are not traits that you can market as easily as a pretty body.
its not that these traits are gone..its jsut mainstream society has become as deep as a cookie sheet

you know, i believe that todays society has something to do with it. society makes us believe that if you dont look a certain way, then your not good material for a relationship for anyone. importance of looks has a little to do with it (i.e. would u date someone that looks like an absolute slob that didnt shower at all? honestly?) and people wonder why divorce rate is at a high rate! people used to fall in love with someone for who they were, not what they wore or how they looked!
