I was raised by an athiest. So I didn't grow up in church. And I do not know much about the bible. So I would like to know what other people believe about this subject. I was talking to someone about dinosaurs the other day and he freaked out telling me that Earth was not around 64 million years ago. The way he freaked out was as if he had not ever heard of it. He didn't even know Yellowstone is a volcano. Well, then he told me that "the bible says Earth has been around for 15,000 years." I have never heard this. And I am not denying that it implies it or anything. But I would like to know what other people think?
Also. Wasn't it around the period of Christ that our concept of time that we know today was created by the Romans? I am probably wrong about that. But I would like to know. So if that were true, then couldn't it be possible that time before that would mean that a day to us could be several before then? I hope that makes sense.

The Bible does not say specifically how old the earth is. However, there was a man named James Ussher from the 1600's who wrote a book called "Annals of the World." Using various sources, including the Bible, (and adding the numbers of years that are contained therein) he postulated that the world was created circa 4004 B.C.

Most Bible-believing Christians hold to a young earth position because of this. His scholarship was outstanding. Of course, most Christians who believe this may differ as the the age of the earth, but do hold to the idea that it is thousands, and not millions of years old.

As far as the calendar change, Ussher accommodated the change instituted by Pope Gregory I, who had a monk named Dionysius Exiguus research and change the calendar to make year 1 A.D. the first "year of our Lord." (Which is what A.D., or Anno Domini, means.)

I hope that helps!

Alot there. The calendar was changed during the time of Gregory (Gregorian). Up to the Roman time, everyone was on the Babylonian, 360 day a year calendar. Even prophecy in the Bible adheres to the 360 day a year calendar.

As for the age of the earth, there are several things at play here. First, the earth was created from a God who does not exist within the present physical limitations of time/space. So a thousand years can be a day to God. As for people believing the earth is billions of years old, remember, they were not there, they do not know. Neither were Creationists for that matter.

Scientists used to believe that the universe was "timeless", that is, that it never had a beginning, nor will ever have an end. However, new evidence proved this to be incorrect. NOW they know that there was a beginning because entropy is winding the universe down. The question is, "who or what wound it up?"

A good book to consider reading is The Creator Beyond Time & Space, where great evidence is presented with many resources to answer you question more specifically.

If you look at the genealogies in the Book of Genesis, and add the lifespans of the names listed, it would lead you to believe that the age of man is roughly 6000 years. This is where many theologians arrive at the age of the earth.
There is disagreement even among Biblical scholars such as
1. Were the "Days" of creation, literal days or periods of time?
2. The exact meaning of the word "begot" as in "Adam begot Seth",,, The Hebrew meaning can be "a descendant of".
You may be referring to 2 Peter 3:8 when you talk of the difference of days "With the Lord a day is like a thousand years and a thousand years are like a day."
I think you just have to have faith that God created the heavens and the earth and that someday you'll know the answer to how long it took Him.

You need to study about the calendars. Each culture has had its own calendars. The Bible is a written record reflecting man's concept of time making it a form of a calendar. It tells us how long people lived long ago. When all of the statistics are compiled it automatically forms a calendar describing how long mankind has lived on the earth. An interesting copy of this material put into a visual form can be found at your favoite Barnes and Nobles... and it give a complete timeline from Adam to the current president of the USA. It is fascinating to study. It really helps you to understand the Bible and history and how they all are interrelated. According to the Bible record, the world with people is about 7,000 years old. There is no way of knowing how long the world existed before God made man. The fossil record shows us that there were creatures on the earth that are now extinct, but our dating of those periods of history are just guesses. Carbon dating is an inaccurate way to measure it all.
A day has always been a day. Our understanding of what the world was like before the flood is incomplete. Christian scientists are trying to understand it all. Creationists like Kent Hovind and others have done a lot of research about it all. Check out his web site. www.DRdino.com

My the confusion that continues on this one.

When you read the first chapter of Genesis you will see that 1. God made the heavens and the earth. 2. And the earth was a great void and formless and 3. God said "Let there be light".

After that time is actually measured as it was not before the season of man.

God destroyed the earth after Lucifer and 1/3 of the host of heaven rebelled and that is why it was "a great void and formless".

There is no indication how long the first earth was around for.

Even the bible talks about dinosaurs in the book of Job when the Behemoth is described by God.

Again, elsewhere the Liviathon is mentioned as a sea dwelling monster that matches the amphibious dinosaurs.

the main serious area of believe in is that Jesus is your savior and asking Him forgiveness so which you will bypass to Heaven sometime. It would not advise you're a lost soul. possible be saved in case you have distinctive perspectives. As for the rapture, a exceptional form of human beings believe distinctive perspectives with regard to the bible. the area of ask your self is 'Do i believe the bible to be the understand God?' in the experience that your answer is sure, then you definately could could desire to believe His be conscious is genuine and subsequently believe interior the rapture. in the experience that your answer isn't any, then you definately have not got any reason to believe it could be genuine. The bible would not actual say rapture. that's in simple terms what we call it because of the fact it ability that Jesus will come and take all believers away to Heaven. because of the fact the be conscious isn't interior the bible some human beings dispute this concept, yet once you quite need to work out for your self you're able to desire to look at 1st Thessalonians financial ruin 3 verse sixteen and 17 and much greater effectual than that see Matthew financial ruin 24 verses 36 by using 40 two. in case you suspect the bible you will believe the rapture after reading this. People were counting days as one cycle of light and dark for millenia before Christ. The modern counting of time where the calendar starts at Christ's birth, the Gregorian calendar, didn't come into effect until 1582. The Jewish calendar is on the year 5767.
Many, though thank goodness not all, people do take the dates in the Bible quite literally, ignoring cold, hard scientific facts. The Earth is billions of years old, dinosaurs didn't just miss the Ark, and some cultures were measuring time by the stars while the ancestors (mine included) of many Christians were still dancing around the cave fire covered in bear grease.

First the bible doesn't "say" that the earth has been around for 15,000 years. Many have come up with this number by tracing geneologies, the different feasts that the Jews celebrated, and many other historical facts, but noone really knows exactly how old the earth is.

As far as the last part of the question you asked, I have to say that I really have no idea exactly what you meant. Please don't be offended by this, I just don't understand what you are asking. Peace

You hit a hot topic amongst Christians. Many will tell you the earth is only 10,000 years old...most likely 6000 years old.

This is not true given a vast amount of scientific data. It IS 64-65 million years old and I AM a Christian btw.

Christians are scared into the beliefe that evolution disproves god and limits his power...there is no biblical proof of this though...it is all dogma.

Genesis is IN FACT written as literally as revelations...from a theology doctor at ETBU...Genesis is written to say "God did it...God's got the power" it is NOT a "here is a literal step by step accounting of creating"

Email me and I'll share more with you. I was raised to dissbelieve in science and only accept that evolution/speciation dissproves/limits/and mocks God...After about a year of conflict with this, and MUCH prayer, I came to peace..the problem is not the facts of science...but that fallisy of dogma...my religion does not interfere with these beliefes...in fact my acceptance of fact has given me a deeper understanding of God and how God works...any way I'm rambling.

To more accuratly answer your question...many will say the bible is "just open for interpritation...it doesn't relate to life today...it's just abunch of stories..." These statements are BROAD ones made on some FEW facts...they are...in the most extreme BROAD view true...again email me and I'll go into detail. But they are for the most part not true and are just last ditch attempts to try to disprove the bible...any way i'm rambling again

[2 Pet 3:8] But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day.

The Old Testament was written by a people who had no understanding of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. They described the beginning of the world with the knowledge they had. God only inspired them to put forth the truth of creation, he left the details up to men.
