My cat has just recently had his shots but still needs to be neutered and he is about 6 mo. old. Early this morning he escaped and hasn't returned. It has been about 16 hours. I am afraid he went looking for females as there are lots of cats around here. Also it rained since he has been out and am worried that this may have made him lost. I was wondering if I should expect him to come back or if there is any way to attract him back. My friend tried putting fish outside but there is no sign of him anywhere.

Yes, I tried calling him many times. Took out the pounce bottle and shook it up because he usually comes running when he hears it. Looked everywhere. He is scared of rain and I'm afraid it drove him away and/or washed away certain smells he would use as landmarks to get back. And when I say it rained, it rained really hard for more than 30 minutes, then it tapered off some but kept going until dawn.

When he is hungry enough, and his physical needs have been met by a willing female in the neighborhood, he will remember the person who most reliably kept him fed, and will return.

He is young, though, so he will have to roam pretty far and wide to find an area without a mature male in charge of servicing the females. If there is a mature male about, he will beat up your cat and maybe even kill him. Your cat could be gone for days or weeks and will likely come home with injuries.

Honestly--the best way I know to get your cat to come home-- get another kitten. He'll come home to try to drive the competition away.

Before my cat was neutered, he used to go "missing" for 24 to 48 hrs., but inevitably returned home to eat. One time, he disappeared for more than a week. I called and called to him all around the neighborhood; knoocked on doors; peered into backyards. At the end of one week, I was convinced he was dead. On the 10th day of his disappearance, I went to church and asked the elders to pray for his safety if he was still alive. When I came home from church, I heard this meoooow meooow from outside my bedroom window. I looked and there was my cat! Dirty and wet and could hardly walk. I cleaned him up, fed him and the next morning took him to the vet. I nursed him back to health, had him neutered and he is now still with me (he is 8 yrs old and healthy).

If your cat is alive, he will come home eventually. But I will say a prayer for him.

He will most likely come home when he gets hungry. He knows the way back

Cats will do this. Especially "Toms". He'll come home when he's ready. He knows where the love and good food is.

Sometimes it really works if you go outside and call "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty, kitty." I don't know why it works, but my Mom always did that and we do it with our kitties sometimes. They do know your voice when they hear it.
