by default, windows assigns .txt files to notepad. Some unknown and other files types are also set to notepad. For example, if you don't have MS Word on your computer, .doc files will be opened by notepad, or if they're too big, by wordpad.

You can change this by going to windows explorer, tools menu > folder options > file types tab.

notepad is the default word processor for windows. Unless you have anyother word processor installed, anything that you would use to type things in would automatically get sent to notepad.

Every application reads any type of file.But the purpose of notepad is to read bytes and displaying them only in ASCII text format. Applications other than notepad, read bytes and depending on the format of that bytes, they produce songs,movies,images,etc... that they are intended.

Notepad is set as the default. Change the default to word if you have it.
