good question... I was always confused by the difference between fruits and veggies... but I think its safe to say that if society tells you its a vegetable, then it probably is (even though science might say otherwise)...

The reason it was classified as a fruit was to avoid taxation in the late 1800's. But from a botany standpoint (and a legal one, too, thanks to the Supreme Court), it's actually a vegetable. Read the whole article for the shocking details! :-)

Even though we all think of a tomato as a vegetable, it's not. It's a fruit. What makes it a fruit? It has seeds-- true vegetables don't.

We tend to think that if it is savory it is vegetable. If it is sweet, it is fruit. Not so. Tomato is a fruit because the seeds are contained in it.
