This is a tough one! There are nuances among atheists indeed.
I checked out the wikipedia link provided by young one and seems pretty serious.
It's interesting that in the sense given by rainydayblues1, atheists have long existed, since the times of King David, see Psalms 14 and 53 (KJV): "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." But these people were not atheists as we know them today, because they were simply worshipping other gods, less demanding in terms of morality.
Also, probably for the first time the name of atheists was given to Christians who refused to worship in the good ol' fashioned pagan way, especially in front of the emperor's statue, which sort of made them look like hostile citizens. Christians were called atheists by the non-Christians because they did not worship gods, but a crucified man (non-Christians were highly suspicious of the belief in both Jesus Christ's divinity and His Resurrection -- that sounds familiar, doesn't it?)
So, it's indeed very amusing how atheists today fight the atheists of yesterday, isn't it?

I never thought of different types of athiests I thought being an athiest was to not believe in any religion. Being agnostic is to believe in something but not sure what. Personally how many gods are there these days.

With atheism, you can make up the rules about existence, how we organise our lives and society etc
So you could say that communism and capitalism are two types of atheist beliefs that were opposed to each other (cold war?).
I'm sure you could add to this list - secularist, humanist etc

Are you the model kind of believers who call non believers mongrels?
I don't believe they exist. It's something dreamt up by the religious to stigmatise the non believers.

Atheism isn't a religion, it's quite the opposite.

As atheism is not an organized "belief" system (not that there aren't atheist organizations), I'd say as many as there are individual atheists.

There are two types: The DAMNED and the DOOMED.
The DAMNED think they are superior to the DOOMED because their destruction is already decided and not merely potential. While the DOOMED feel superior to the DAMNED for exactly the same reason. The DAMNED are also known as Christians, while the DOOMED are also known as Non-Christians.
Can you make any sense of that: I can't.

there is just one type of atheism - meaning you don't believe there is a God but you can also be agnostic meaning you are not sure if there is a God.
