School-Age Children and Preteens
Kids ages 6 to 9 need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Bedtime difficulties can arise at this age from a child's need for private time with parents, without siblings around. Try to make a little private time just before bedtime and use it to share confidences and have small discussions, which will also prepare your child for sleep.

Children ages 10 to 12 need a little over 9 hours of shuteye a night. But it's up to parents to judge the exact amount of rest their children need and see that they're in bed in time for sufficient sleep.

Lack of sleep for kids can cause irritable or hyper types of behavior and can also make a condition like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) worse.

Teens
Adolescents need about 8 to 9.5 hours of sleep per night, but many don't get it. And as they progress through puberty, teens actually need more sleep. Because teens often have schedules packed with school and activities, they're typically chronically sleep deprived (or lacking in a healthy amount of sleep).

And sleep deprivation adds up over time, so an hour less per night is like a full night without sleep by the end of the week. Among other things, sleep deprivation can lead to:

decreased attentiveness
decreased short-term memory
inconsistent performance
delayed response time
These can cause generally bad tempers, problems in school, stimulant use, and driving accidents (more than half of "asleep-at-the-wheel" car accidents are caused by teens).

Adolescents also experience a change in their sleep patterns — their bodies want to stay up late and wake up later, which often leads to them trying to catch up on sleep during the weekend. This sleep schedule irregularity can actually aggravate the problems and make getting to sleep at a reasonable hour during the week even harder.

Ideally, a teenager should try to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, allowing for at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep.

I am guessing you are 16. At 16 I could get by on 4-6 hours of sleep a night. Now, at age 32, I need 8. Of course, I have a new baby so I get 6. Anyeway, I was cool with 6 hrs a night until about 25 yrs old. Regardless though, if you sleep 8 hours a night, enjoy it. Nothing is gained by less sleep.

The average person needs 7 - 10 hours sleep a day. If your body is telling you to sleep 8 hours then sleep 8 hours. Forcing yourself to get less sleep than your body requires will cause more harm than good.

Doctors and scientist agree - 8 hours a day is normal and healthy. When you sleep your body heals itself and restores itself.. that's why you feel refreshed when you wake up. You should stick with 8 hours because it is healthy and you will look younger and be a more fit person than your friends in the long run.. Overweight is linked to lack of sleep and many other problems. Get your zzzzzzzz's.

As an additional note to the current answers, people can lie about how much sleep they get. You might find if you could watch your friends all the time, they sleep a lot more than they say they do.

I would say go to sleep when you feel tired and get up when you wake up. You'll soon find out how much sleep you need and when it is best for you to sleep.

If you cut down on sleep, you will have harder to learn things in school. You will also easier become overweight, since you become less active.
Everyone needs different amount of sleep, so it is not something you can compare with others.
Old people usually needs less sleep than young people, so if your parents nag you for sleeping to much, you can tell them it's because you are not old like them.

no its not. 8 hrs is recommended sleep hrs a night for an active person. if that person yawns a lot then he is not getting enough sleep. if u cant get 8 then definitely shoot for 7 and a half. if you cant do either, then stay with 6 and make sure you get a nap during the day.

Your friends are all Heroin addicts and no longer need the beneficial affects of sleep- anyone tells you that they are not sleeping, and look for Amphetamines.

You can do without 8 hrs a night, but I do not recommed cutting your time down unless you feel you are restless.

Everyone should get 8 or more hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation can cause anxiety, stress, overeating, loss of concentration, fatigue, etc.

Do what has worked for you. Physically all of our bodies have different needs. Sometimes people get health problems because they think their base something or another should be like somebody else's.
