I have a friend of mine and he rented some stuff from Colortyme for about six years but when he couldn't make the payments they wouldn't work with him and he just let it go and of course he didn't get the money back. He payed for a computer, which I said was dumb, for about 4000 dollars total but they say he still owes 500 dollars and he has a bedroom set, livingroom, and kitchen table. Friends tell him to just keep the stuff and tell him not to open the door because they can't really do anything and they know this from personal experience, trust me but he went searching online and he has heard stories of others getting in trouble for this kind of thing but he doesn't know obviously if these are real. He needs advice. Can they really truely do anything to him?

Absolutely. It would be considered grand theft. now he could state with police report that something got stolen and they couldnt do anything, but they can go as far as comming in your house if your not there. ive heard some awful stories. tell him to go buy from goodwill yardsales walmart newspaper its a whole lot cheaper

I think the most important thing he needs to do is review the documents that he signed with Colortyme. It is more than likely considered a valid contract, and I imagine that there are terms in the contract regarding default on payments. If this is the case, it is quite probable a civil action can be maintained to recover the merchandise. Depending on the state he is in, if a judgment is obtained in the civil action, his wages may be garnished. If he is head of household, probably not, but there are still other remedies available such as a doctrine called replevin. It is highly unlikely that they will just try to enter the house and take the merchandise out since that would be considered a breach of the peace. But, rest assured, Colortyme has protected itself and has multiple remedies to get their merchandise back one way or another.

Yes they can do something about it. I have rented from places like that before and it does say in the contract what the company can and will do upon default of payment. Not all places are willing to take it real far, but some will. The start with annoying calls, sending you mail, then work there way up to trying to get a warrant to retrieve their property, which it still is until it is paid for, and in some rare cases take the person to court.

I bought a living place wherever I worked more than a year or stayed in a hotel. Reason being once I had a brawl with the landlord and I promised myself never to live in a rented house thereafter.
