Actually, a lot of it has to do wtih self-preservation. We treat others as we would like to be treated. We don't want to be killed, so we don't kill. We don't steal from others, as we wouldn't want others to steal from us. It really is as simple as that.

They are not God's laws but simply put they are Laws that govern this universe.....many people do not know or understand them nor will many of them ever in this lifetime But, the bible or organized religions are an attempt to put these laws into an easy to digest baby formula for the brain format..... Things such as "The Law of Deliberate Creation" or the most popular "The Law of Attraction" govern our lives wether we understand them or not.....Understanding them and learning how to use them is what makes a person "enlightened"
Its not as hard as it sounds but its a complete change of personal philosphy.....which many people crack at the though of such a great change......I almost did myself.....but I still strive to be enlightened everyday I wake and take my first conscious breath.......Don't focus so much on the conflict of differences.....that is the minefield many people spend most of their lives never accomplishing what they wanted to before they came here....Right and wrong....,moral and unjust is just a way to control the herd.......its your choice if U want to be in the herd.......whether it seems like U have a choice or not......thinking for yourself and questioning things fed to us as Dogma are a good way to start.....

GOD Created the Earth and put Spiritual Laws in it (Reaping and Sowing).
They work whether you Believe in GOD or not.

People have done this in the Past.
They keep Breaking the Spiritual Laws and Keep getting Evilier and Wickeder---untill GOD has to Flood the Earth.
It is not Meaness, it is Mercy.
What do they do with an Animal that gets run over by car and is too messed up to Save.

Sinning over and over and getting Evilier and Wickeder will mess you up so bad that you will Never, Ever Turn to GOD and be Nice again.
Nothing left to do but put them out of their Misery (Mercy of GOD). GOD has the Right to do that.

The point?
The point is to be moral and ethical for its own sake.
The Golden Rule is not something that originated with Jesus

Then we wouldn't kill one another, run planes into our 'Gods' enemies buildings, kill the mentally ill and call them witches, condemn anyone that refuses to accept our beliefs, all in the name of a all-mighty God. Non-believers have better morals than believers, so don't ask another stupid question like this again. We base our beliefs on reason, logic, compassion, and what we think is right. Not what some imaginary God in the sky told us to do. He often demanded that people be kill, men, women and children. Believed in slaves, etc. You think those are good morals?

For those who do not believe in God, ethics and morality come from an unwritten social code, a contract that says "I will treat you this way, but you must treat me this way in return." It all boils down to their version of the Golden Rule.

All cultures, regardless of what the predominant religious belief, have certain moral codes. Not all are to Western standards but generally are to preserve the integrity of the culture.

Paradox, I don't have to answer to a God. I have to answer to myself, and I am a much harder judge of character than any God could ever be. When I go to bed at night, I lay down with all that I did that day. One's conscience can be a pretty demanding bedfellow, and can often keep one awake. When I shut my eyes, I don't wish to be haunted by my actions that day. I wish to drift off in peace. I sleep very well.

ethics are more that just following the laws of god, they are behaving in a way that helps you survive in a society. You don't have to be christian to know its wrong to do things that harm others.

Because it is the right thing to do. Just because you don't believe in God it doesn't mean that you are an immoral person.

Get a grip.
